Week 2 Notebook (Upstate)

Week 2 arrived and the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna had some teams playing on Thursday night while some opted to give it a go in the rain on Friday. Inside get some recaps/notes from some of our loyal SCPrepNation.com contributors who ventured out to see some of the action in the upstate of South Carolina. 2009 Rock Hill TE Asa Watson (pictured) was among the players coming out with a victory.

Week 2 Notebook (Upstate)

Chapman 21 Wade Hampton (G) 27- This one looked like it was gonna be a blowout. Wade Hampton ran out to a 27-0 lead before Chapman made a late rally scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Wade Hampton got things started with recent Presbyterian verbal commit K Patrick Morgano kicked a 38 yard FG. He also later boomed one from 47 yards out. PC is getting a great prospect in this kid. Wade Hampton's Blake Hayes had 2 touchdowns. One on a 25 yard pass and another on a nice 45 yard run. Chapman's late scores were by RB Reggie Davis (2 TDs) and Dwayne Byrd. This one was a bit surprising for me considering Chapman was in the AA state championship game last year. C.V.

Southside 26 Woodmont 27- Man what a game. I really enjoyed this one. Both of these teams have been down in the past few seasons. Both teams have looked good coming in to this one and it turned out to be a great game. One of the best I've seen in quite a few years in fact. The rains came and Woodmont's objective was clear. Keep the ball as long as possible to keep Southside's offense off the field. It worked as Woodmont scored 14 points in the opening quarter on touchdown runs by RB Shundrez Smoot. Southside answered though on a 37 yard TD pass by Justin Goldsmith to Tyrell Butler. Then Southside WR Chris Rhodes took a handoff and made a sensational reversal of field and took it to the endzone from 35 yards out. This young man has some moves and can fly! The Tigers however were unable to convert both of their two point conversion tries and the score was 14-12 at the half. The second half saw Woodmont score first on a short pass from QB/ATH Johnnie Houston to Zach Cureton. Southside came right back at them and Jataurux Maddox scored 2 TD's in the third as Justin Goldsmith converted one of their two-point conversion tries to make it 26-20 in favor of Southside heading into the 4th quarter. Shundrez Smoot scored from 10 yards out and Brandon Byers extra point proved to be the difference with the final being 27-26. John Sanders signing off from a great game at Woodmont High School! J.S.

Rock Hill 45 Nation Ford 14- Rock Hill appears like they are ready to move forward as contenders as they mopped the floor up with Nation Ford scoring 45 unanswered points to start the game. The Bearcats ground game dominated early on as they scored their first four TDs on the ground with scores by Jerante Hood, Jatavious Stewart, and Jamal Tyler (2). Stewart was forced to move to quarterback after Randall Dixon suffered an injury to his foot. I got no word on how serious the injury was. Stewart then passed for the next two Rock Hill TDs with catches by Hood and Xavier McFadden. Nation Ford got both of their scores in the 4th quarter as the game was well out of reach. Rock Hill's matchup versus Northwestern should be a barnburner next week. I look forward to making it and reporting once again to SCPrepNation.com. R.K.
