Looking over the list of South Carolina players in attendance at the Under Armour/Scout.com combine this past May we saw plenty of players who we expected to have solid showings. Then there were guys who we knew posted good stats but were somewhat uncertain as to how they'd respond to high level competition and testing against some of the very best from the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Well during and after the combine in Charlotte Carden was one of the top performers in testing amongst not only running backs but all prospects. The surface was extremely slow at the practice fields of the Carolina Panthers and Carden still managed a solid 4.69 time. He also timed an impressive 4.21 seconds in the short shuttle. His broad jump was among the very best as he came extremely close to a huge benchmark (10 feet) posting a 9 foot 10 inch leap.
So far during his senior season things have gone well for Carden and he talked about it all in depth. After being informed of his player of the week nod the 2009 prospect says the game last week was definitely one of his very best. "The game against Orangeburg Wilkinson was my best I think. I carried the ball 24 times for 275 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was the best game I've ever had rushing. I ran over numerous people and felt unstoppable out there."
This coming Friday brings forth a big matchup Carden and company as they take on rivals Irmo. "This next game against Irmo, it's a big rivalry game, and they beat us to a pulp last year so we're ready for redemption. That's the biggest rivalry here." The game will feature Carden along with Irmo 2010 RB Mustafa Greene as the workhorses for both teams.
Carden wasn't certain of his statistics specifically but says he's run for 1100+ yards and has scored 15 or more touchdowns so far to his recollection in 2008.
"I have scholarship offers from Air Force and Presbyterian right now." More schools remain actively in the hunt in terms of recruiting Carden over the course of the rest of his senior season. "I hear a lot from Elon, William & Mary, Georgia Southern, and South Carolina. Georgia Southern calls me a lot and so does South Carolina."
Having good size already Carden brings the attitude necessary to make him a bruising running back. He quickly pointed out his areas of strengths and weaknesses to us. "My toughness and lateral speed are my biggest strengths. I'd say my straightaway or breakaway speed is what I need to work on the most." Carden says his fastest 40 time thus far was a 4.51 second time.
A tireless worker in the weight room Carden's numbers on the field are a direct reflection of that hard work pumping iron. Here's a quick rundown of Carden's maxes in the gym.
Anthony Carden Maxes
- Bench press: 340 pounds
- Squat: 500 pounds
- Power clean: 340 pounds
Heading into the second half of the regular season Carden has already made a few visits and talked about those trips. "I went out to visit Air Force earlier in the year. I like the way they played. The way they play is kinda like my personality so I feel like I can fit in really well with them."
He has also visited in-state programs Wofford, Citadel, and Presbyterian as well. "With Presbyterian I really like the campus, plus they ended up winning their game. They're looking at me at linebacker. I would like to play regardless of wherever but I'd prefer to play running back."
Carden will sit down and weigh all of his options thoroughly so don't expect a decision anytime soon. "I'm gonna wait until I get the best offer that seems right to me."
"Academics will play a big role for me. The coaching staff and a school with a good reputation will also be important for me." Sporting a 3.87 GPA in the classroom it's apparent that Carden takes care of business off the field as well as he is also a member of the Science Club along with other clubs and activities outside of football.
