In less than a week 8 teams will converge on Clemson's Death Valley to take part in this year's Weekend of Champions. We caught up with one of the biggest stars slated to play for a state championship this Saturday, Sumter High RB Roderick McDowell.

You can hear the excitement in Roderick McDowell's voice. His Sumter squad has faced a number of great teams along the way but they are now ready to play their final game of the season for the biggest prize in the state. Asked how he feels heading into the game against Byrnes on Saturday he responded, "It's wonderful man. We came this far and we've had fun and we need to get the job done now. It's phenomenal!"

During their trip through the playoff tree the Gamecocks have faced some strong competition and answered the bell resoundingly each time. One team so far stands out as the toughest one McDowell says he's faced. "I think the toughest team so far was Gaffney. They are coached very well and defensively they run to the ball and go hard no matter what."

The task gets no easier facing the Byrnes Rebels on Saturday. McDowell talked about what he knows thus far about the Rebels. "Byrnes is gonna play hard until the whistle blows. I've seen some of their players' highlight tapes. I think if we just play our game we can stick with them. I'm looking forward to it (playing Byrnes) because we've got a chance to play some of the top teams along the way. Like Greenwood and Gaffney. They are good programs and for us to play those guys and do the things we've done and come out with a victory. They are coached well and so are we."

Currently committed to the Clemson Tigers Saturday will be McDowell's first time playing at Death Valley. "It's phenomenal. Knowing that I committed to Clemson knowing that I'll be one of the first players in that class to step foot on that field and get to play on the field first. Showing them what they can expect from me next year."

Still the coaching uncertainty at Clemson still weighs heavily on his mind and ultimately his decision possibly. "You know after Saturday's win I am still with them. After talking to Dabo Swinney. From the looks of things and how everything was that he's gonna be there. If Dabo stays then I'm 100% there with Clemson especially if coach Powell stays too." and other members of the staff will be on location all weekend to bring you the very best coverage of "The Weekend of Champions," so stay tuned.
