Daniel High School defensive lineman, DeShawn Williams, took a trip up to Columbia, SC to take in Junior Day at the University of South Carolina. And needless to say, it was quite a memorable experience for the youngster. "It went real," Williams told SCPrepNation.com. "They showed me a lot of good things about South Carolina that really opened up my eyes."
"I really didn't think much about South Carolina until I went there on last Saturday," Williams continued. "But now, I can really see myself going there and playing there. It's a real good school. It seems like a place that would prepare me for the real world."
One other thing that Williams enjoyed while he was in Columbia was the opportunity to meet and greet. "I saw A.J. (Cann) from Bamberg and (Gerald) Dixon from Northwestern," Williams said. "I also saw a couple of guys from Marlboro County, and South Pointe. There were also a few guys from Chester out there. It was a lot fun getting to meet and talk to some of those guys."
Williams understood that the event was primarily for the recruiting class of 2010. And due to the fact that he's a member of the 2011 class, he simply counted it as an honor to be in the mix. "It felt good to be amongst so many great players," Williams said. "But I know I'm going to have to step up my game each year to get where those guys are. I just need to continue working hard to get there."
In an effort to step up his game, Williams has been diligently working on an off-season plan; lifting and running. He has also started making his rounds on the 2009 Camp/Combine Circuit. "I went up to the Nike Combine on last weekend," the 6-2, 290 pound DT shared with SCPrepNation.com. "It was really a great experience for me. There were a lot of great athletes out there, and a lot of competition. But I proved to some of them that I could hang with them."
"I did real well in the shuttle," Williams continued. "I never thought I'd run a 4.66 in the shuttle. It surprise a lot of people that a guy my size could move that quickly. I also did pretty well in the power ball throw. I threw a 42.0."
Williams had one of the better SPARQ scores for his position on last Sunday. He's hoping to take that momentum to Athens, Georgia, whenever he takes part in the Nike Training Camp at the University of Georgia.
Last fall Williams recorded 87 tackles, 9 TFL, and led his team in sacks with 7. Stay tuned for much more on this talented prospect from out of the 2011 recruiting class.
