Lowcountry football fans awoke this morning to the terrible news that Fort Dorchester Football coach John Bagwell was tragically killed in a one car accident on rural route 165 sometime around midnight after attending a get together with family and friends in Edisto. He was on his way back home when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. He was pronounced dead at MUSC a short time later.
The Bagwell family has lost two great men this year in John and his father who passed away earlier this fall. John built the Patriot program from scratch and had methodically improved the facilities and the tradition of Ft. Dorchester football year after year.
Having known John makes it very difficult to write this but I can tell you first hand that Coach John Bagwell was a man who loved the game, loved his players and just plain loved life. At only 37 years of age, he already had the respect from other coaches that is usually reserved for only the most seasoned veterans. A fiery competitor, he translated that drive and competative nature to all who came in contact with him.
I will update this story later today with info on funeral services.
May the good Lord place his hand of peace and mercy on the family in the hour of grief for today the lowcountry and the entire state mourn the loss of a legend in the making.
