While the junior class dominated the landscape of the participants at this year's Fox Sports/Scout.com combine in Charlotte NC there were also quite a few underclassmen who competed at the event as well. Many of those underclassmen upped the ante and gave the Scout.com staff reason to smile due to their efforts and potential. One of those prospects that SCPrepNation.com kept a close eye on was 2011 Northwestern DE Roderick Byers. The 2011 standout spoke candidly about his combine experience and updated us about a new program that has started to show him early interest.
For Byers Sunday's combine was his very first. There was obviously a level of uncertainty that ran through his mind as he was preparing with good friend and 2011 teammate DT Gerald Dixon.
"Overall it was pretty exciting! I was very nervous at first but I got more comfortable as the combine went on."
We spoke with Byers throughout the day and watched him from afar to see just how he'd respond to being in the mix with some of the Carolinas top junior prospects. In terms of testing the slow surface hindered most participants times but Byers held his own.
Where he stood out for us was during the one on one drills. Given the opportunity to lock it up with some of the Carolinas best offensive linemen Byers drew not only our praise but praise from Scout.com National Media Editor Miller Safrit and Scout.com National Recruiting Director Scott Kennedy as well.
With time on his side and the potential to continue to get even larger and faster there is obvious upside for the talented Northwestern Trojan product.
"Miami just asked me for my film. I should be hearing more from them soon hopefully." At this point it is still early for Byers but with a strong track record in the classroom and his potential starting to shine bright things should continue to pick up with colleges from all over.
Touching back on the combine experience Byers we had a lengthy discussion with him. He performed so well during his one on ones that we honestly wanted to see him jump up for more reps and work against top flight offensive linemen.
"I was still a little nervous heading into the one on ones but you're right I should have gotten in on more action."
