Gaffney High School announced that 7 candidates are finalist for the vacant head coach job and all three have different backgrounds.

One of the more interesting names that would have to be considered a long shot is for former Clemson standout Terry Kinard.  Kinard, a first round draft pick out of Clemson, played on the New York Giants Super Bowl teams. He was also a member of the Tigers' 1981 national championship team that beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. He has no high school coaching experience but did serve as an assistant at a small college in Arizona.

Also listed among the 7 finalist are current assistant coach Mike Biddix and Batesburg-Leesville head coach Phil Strickland. Strickland has won a state championship at Ridge Spring-Monetta and Batesburg-Leesville. Other names of finalist were not released or were not made public.

The second round of interviews could begin as early as Friday.

Many of the top names in the state have been mentioned as possible candidates for the job but most withdrew their named from consideration. Among those rumored names included  Bobby Bentley from Byrnes , Dave Gutshall from Dorman, Doc Davis from Spartanburg's and Greenwood's Shell Dula.

School officials have said they want to name a coach this month.
