Currently we are in the heart of summer AAU play and prospects are working feverishly to catch the eyes of college coaches. One prospect who has been on the recruiting radar for almost 2 years now is 2011 Damien Leonard. The J.L. Mann High standout continues his ascension up the rankings and SCPrepNation.com caught up with the ultratalented shooting guard for an update.
Leonard normally runs with his local AAU team the Carolina Cougars but this year he has also run with the Florida Rams. This offseason Damien continues to evolve as a player as he's made it a point to work on other aspects of his game to show college coaches that he indeed is more than just a marksman from deep.
"I will be running with the Rams again some in July too. Well yeah everyone knows I can shoot it. I want show them that I can dribble, drive, and pass it well too. I'm really working hard on my defense and ball handling this offseason to get my all-around game even better."
With his reputation continuing to grow on the national level Leonard says the competition level has heated up quite a bit. "Yeah every game there's someone that knows who I am but when they come at me hard, all it does is just makes me play even harder. So either way I'm going to bring it." The win-win situation continues to drive Leonard to improve his skill set. Working out with his AAU coach and some former college coaches in Greenville a couple of days each week, Leonard's body of work continues its rise. That hard work has seen his recruitment rise along with his talents.
When asked to update the newest schools to enter the picture since our last interview Leonard called out a long and prestigious list of schools.
"Since the last time we talked let's see... Arizona, Marquette, Georgia, Miami, Florida, Kentucky, Memphis, Stanford, UCLA, and Kansas have been after me the hardest. All of those school have offered me too."
So with those powerhouses on board along with previous offers from Clemson, South Carolina, and Wake Forest Leonard now stands at 13 scholarship offers. One of Leonard's childhood favorites has also stepped up their interest as well. "North Carolina has been sending me a lot of mail lately. I'm looking forward to talking with coach Williams and the rest of their staff."
After July ends Leonard says he'll be able to make some more rounds on the visit trail. He says he's already been to Virginia Tech, Georgia, and Clemson recently. As for those future visits he shared which schools he'd like to see in the near future.
"Wake Forest, Texas, Kentucky, Miami, and Memphis are some of the schools I'd like to see soon."
Leonard also says he's been keeping his academics in order as well as he reports a 3.4 GPA currently.
