It was a busy weekend for Hakeem Flowers. The 6'3 180 pound prospect made the journey from Greenville SC to participate in a one day camp with the Florida State Seminoles. That visit was well worth the journey as he walked away with his first scholarship offer. SCPrepNation.com caught up with Flowers to talk about the experience in Talahassee.
"I worked out at wide receiver in the morning session and then at defensive back and safety in the evening session. That lasted about an hour or so and then they said they wanted me back at wide receiver so they could look at me some more there."
Towards the end of camp Hakeem said he was approached by his mentor who informed Flowers that he would be receiving a written offer in the mail September 1st from the Seminoles. Asked what went through his mind upon hearing the news Flowers said, "It just made me want to work harder."
Talking about the FSU camp experience Flowers shared these details. "I liked it a lot. I got some good reps and caught some nice balls. The coaches were pretty nice out there too. There was also some good competition down there. There were some good wideouts but I can't remember their names right now. I talked the most with coach Bob LaCivita and coach Quincy Lawrence the most while I was there."
Being his first scholarship offer Flowers doesn't want to jump the gun just yet in pulling the trigger he says. He plans on finding out more about FSU's academic program in a thorough manner and any other programs that enter the recruiting race for his services before making a final decision.
"I want to major in business management so I'll be looking at all the schools that I'm interested in academically to see if it has a good program."
Another ACC school that stayed in the shadows after learning of Flowers late last season is Maryland. The Terrapins caught wind of the Seminoles offer to Flowers and on Sunday he heard from their staff.
"Sunday I was verbally offered by Maryland too. That offer really caught me off guard."
With two ACC offers in just as many days the world of recruiting hit Flowers head on. Did the sudden popularity and offers catch Flowers by surprise?
"Yes but it makes me want to work a whole lot harder to make myself even better. I'm working really hard this offseason on getting stronger and running better routes."
As for the fame and attention he'll start to be showered with he responded by saying, "Yes I'm looking forward to that too. Really though I'm mainly wanting to learn more about all of the different schools and their academics. My options at each school and beyond just football."
With that said if he does indeed make strides in those areas as well as other details of his game we expect more schools to come knocking down the door to try and see if they can land a commit from Flowers.
In regards to his upcoming junior season Flowers says his main goal is to help his team improve first and also to improve his own skills while helping lead his team.
Flowers also said he'd enjoy the opportunity to visit Florida State during the upcoming season during a gameday to check out the atmosphere that the Seminoles have.
