The stage couldn't have been bigger. A live national audience pitting the #1 ranked and #2 ranked teams in the nation playing one another. Big time players step up and perform when the lights are on and the nation is watching. One player who fully capitalized on his chance in the spotlight is 2010 Byrnes WR Jazz King. We caught up recently with King as he informed us of his latest offer from ACC country and a couple of heavyweight suitors from the SEC conference as well.
Although his Rebels fell short in their battle with St. Thomas Aquinas last week 42-34, Jazz King shined brightly and displayed the talents that have made him a highly coveted prospect in the Palmetto State. King talked about the battle against STA and his thoughts on his performance.
"I think I played great. People were telling me how good their secondary was and I just tried to go out there and shut their mouth. Yeah there was a lot of jawing going on between us and their secondary. I ended up with 9 catches for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was my best game of the year I think especially considering the level of competition."
The loss hurt King and his teammates but after posting 600+ yards of offense on a St. Thomas Aquinas squad that boasts 19 D1 prospects there's no doubt that the country realizes the power of the Byrnes program now. They will now turn their attention to Spartanburg High whom they will face this Friday night.
That bodes well for the Rebels and maybe not so well for their future opponents.
King landed an official offer Tuesday night from North Carolina. King says coach John Blake stays in contact with him on a regular basis but a new coach has taken over his recruitment. He talked about the offer from the Tar Heels.
"It feels good to get the offer from North Carolina. I have been waiting on them for a while. I was real happy when I found out about it."
King has visited Chapel Hill a couple of times already and says he's had a chance to check out the entire campus and the atmosphere at Kenan Stadium during those visits.
He'll soon be making a return visit to the campus after he makes a trip to SEC country this coming Saturday to check out Mississippi.
"I might be making an official visit to North Carolina in two weeks. I've already been trying to set that up with coach Blake and my recruiter. They are recruiting me as an athlete."
With the most recent offer from North Carolina his list of offers comprises of Kansas, Mississippi, UCF, Marshall, & Tulane. That list of offers could very well change as King has been on a tear during his senior season. The early highlight film should land him more offers in the near future and those coaches who watched the Byrnes-STA game on ESPNU were able to witness firsthand his abilities.
Two prominent SEC programs King says have really stepped up their recruitment as of late.
"Florida and Tennessee have been recruiting me really hard here lately. I'm still wide open to being recruited by everybody right now."
There remains a number of schools that King says he'd like to hear from in the near future as well.
Potential schools should take note that King informed us that a commitment could be made within the next two months possibly. That decision will weigh heavily upon his relationship with the coaching staff and how comfortable he feels within the program. Location will not play a role in his decision either he informed us.
