Nike Hoop Summit International Roster Announced
The game, which will be played under international rules, will feature Americas' top senior boys high school players taking on a World Select Team comprised of the world's top players who are 19-years-old or younger.
The 2004 World Select Team was selected by the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) with the approved sanctioning of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the world governing body of international basketball. The World Select Team consists of players from four of FIBA's five geographic zones: FIBA Africa, FIBA Americas, FIBA Asia and FIBA Europe.
The 2004 World Select Team, coached by legendary Italian Coach Allesandro Gamba and Serbian Coach Marin Sedlacek, will be comprised of the following international players: Woyceck Barycz (Poland); Andrea Bargnani (Italy); Andris Biedrins (Latvia); Luka Bogdanovic (Serbia/M); Ivan Chiriaev (Russia); Odia Churchill (Nigeria); Marcus Vinicius Vieira De Souza (Brazil); Yi Jian Lian (China); Sergio Rodriquez (Spain) and Roko Leni Ukic (Croatia).
The 2004 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Select Team was announced earlier this month. The players selected were: LaMarcus Aldridge (Seagoville High School/Seagoville, Texas); Jordan Farmar (William H. Taft/Woodland Hills, Calif.); Rudy Gay (Archbishop Spalding/Severn, Md.); Malik Hairston (Renaissance High School/Detroit, Mich); Dwight Howard (Southwest Atlanta Christian/Atlanta, Ga.); Al Jefferson (Prentiss High School/Prentiss, Miss.); Josh Smith (Oak Hill Academy/Mouth of Wilson, Va.); J.R. Smith (St. Benedict's Prep School/Newark, N.J.); Sebastian Telfair (Abraham Lincoln High School/Brooklyn, N.Y.); Mike Williams (Wilcox Central High School/Camden, Ala.).
USA teams have won four of the previous six Hoop Summit match-ups. A premiere event for high school seniors, 50 former USA and World Select Hoop Summit team members have been drafted by NBA teams and 28 USA players and nine world team members currently play in the NBA. International talents like Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker are just a few of the athletes that have played in the Hoop Summit and gone on to stardom.
