Basketball Recruiting Roundup

As we get rolling on another year of the Basketball Recruiting Roundup, we get you caught up on all the biggest recruiting news from the past month, including commitments from Top 10 players Tyler Hansbrough, Julian Wright and Tasmin Mitchell.

It's been a while since we last put together a Basketball Recruiting Roundup, as we spent the summer working on the second annual High School Hoops Yearbook in conjunction with the Sporting News. And we think you'll be pleased with the results when the magazine hits newsstands this fall.

But we also know you probably want to know what's been going on in the world of basketball recruiting over the past month. So with a new school year upon us, we're getting back to providing a weekly Basketball Recruiting Roundup every Thursday throughout the fall.

With so many commitments to get caught up on, we'll just give you the rundown of the big commitments this week before diving deeper into the analysis in the coming weeks.

Here's a recap of the big news from the past month:

Poplar Bluff (Mo.) senior power forward Tyler Hansbrough committed to the University of North Carolina over Kentucky, Kansas and Missouri. Rated the No. 3 recruit in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports, the 6-foot-8, 224-pound Hansbrough should be a great fit for the Tar Heels under coach Roy Williams. …

Homewood-Flossmoor (Ill.) senior small forward Julian Wright somewhat surprisingly pledged to Kansas last week. Wright had previously narrowed his list to three finalists: Illinois, Arizona and DePaul. But SchoolSports.com reported earlier this month that Kansas had entered the mix, and Wright eventually decided on the Jayhawks after a strong late push by coach Bill Self. The 6-foot-7, 214-pounder is rated the No. 5 recruit in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports. …

Denham Springs (La.) senior power forward Tasmin Mitchell surprised nobody by committing to LSU over Kentucky earlier this month. This is the third straight season LSU has landed the top talent in Louisiana, following Brandon Bass two years ago and Glen Davis last year. Although Mitchell's stock has fallen some recently, he's still rated the No. 8 player in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports. …

Giles County (Tenn.) senior small forward Tyler Smith committed to Tennessee earlier this month. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound slasher is rated the No. 22 player in the Class of 2005. …

St. Andrew's (Del.) senior center Eric Boateng pledged to Duke last month over schools such as Boston College, Georgetown, Georgia Tech and UCLA. The 6-foot-9, 230-pound big man is rated the No. 29 recruit in the Class of 2005. …

Crisp County (Ga.) senior shooting guard Lewis Clinch committed to Georgia Tech over Georgia and Wake Forest last month. The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder is rated the No. 58 player in the Class of 2005. …

Yough (Pa.) senior power forward Ben McCauley committed to North Carolina State over interest from Cincinnati, Ohio State and Xavier earlier this month. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound bruiser is rated the No. 82 recruit in the Class of 2005. …

UNLV has picked up commitments from three highly rated recruits in the past few weeks: Lynwood (Calif.) senior combo forward Davon Jefferson, Gulf Shores Academy (Texas) senior point guard Jovan Adams and Riverton (Utah) senior small forward Joe Darger. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound Jefferson is the best of the bunch, as he's rated the No. 36 recruit in the Class of 2005. …

Brewster Academy (N.H.) senior small forward Chad Millard pledged to Louisville over Iowa State earlier this week. The 6-foot-9, 212-pound wing is rated the No. 88 recruit in the Class of 2005.
