Where is Downs Going?

Juanita (Kirkland, Wash.) senior small forward and top Kansas recruit Micah Downs had a busy holiday, telling reporters he was declaring for the NBA Draft then two days later communicating through his father that he was still firmly committed to the Jayhawks.

Juanita (Kirkland, Wash.) senior small forward Micah Downs had a busy holiday over the past week after a story came out in The Seattle Times on Dec. 24 that he was declaring for the 2005 NBA Draft, but didn't plan on signing with an agent. Downs, who is rated the No. 6 small forward and No. 16 overall recruit in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports.com, signed with Kansas in November.

"You never really know for sure if you're ready until somebody says you are, but I want to make this happen," Downs told The Seattle Times. "I've always wanted to play in the NBA, but I never really thought about making the jump. That came up lately."

"We're still talking to people to figure out what we can and cannot do," added Micah's father, Steven. "But make no mistake, Micah is firmly committed to going to the NBA next year. This is his dream."

While this news certainly startled more than a few Kansas fans, Steven Downs told Phog.net a different story a couple days later.

"Micah's ultimate goal is to play in the league but we're not trying to rush anything," said Steven Downs. "He's got a lot of work to do, he's got to get stronger and mature and he's not ready for the NBA. Micah's plan is to go to Kansas and that is what me and his mother want him to do."
