2005 Rivalry Tour: Mission Viejo trounces Issaquah

No. 1 ranked Mission Viejo (Calif.) rolled to victory over Issaquah (Wash.) in the third matchup of the 2005 SchoolSports Rivalry Tour presented by Old Spice.

Mission Viejo (Calif.), ranked No. 1 in the country by SchoolSports, scored the first 48 points en route to a 55-36 victory over Issaquah (Wash.) in the third matchup of the 2005 SchoolSports Rivalry Tour presented by Old Spice.

The game, held at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash. over the Labor Day weekend, quickly turned into a blowout after Mission Viejo torched Issaquah for one-play touchdown drives of 80, 38 and 40 yards before halftime. Issaquah compounded matters in the first half by fumbling three times and managing only one first down and 11 yards of total offense, including minus-2 yards rushing.

After fumbling the kickoff and watching Issaquah miss its field goal attempt, Mission Viejo's first play from scrimmage provided a glimpse of what was to come. Diablos quarterback R.J. Toman faked a handoff to 240-pound running back Chane Moline and passed to wide-open Sean Fitzgerald for the 80-yard touchdown. Then the rout began, and by halftime the Diablos led 48-0.

Moline rushed six times for 66 yards and three touchdowns, and Fitzgerald, a 6-foot-4 receiver, added another touchdown reception of 40 yards. In all, 10 Diablos caught passes, and none of their starters played in the second half.

Among the limited highlights for Issaquah were junior running back Matt Gellatly 71-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half to get the Eagles on the board. And later in the third quarter, quarterback Bryan Jones connected with Bryce Buslach for a 21-yard score. Also, Issaquah backup quarterback Ryan Wewerka completed 7 of 9 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown.
