Quick Slant: LB Brandon Boykin

So it's your senior year, you've got schools as close as Vandy, Ole Miss and Alabama and as far away as Stanford looking at you. They like you because you have legit 4.5 speed in the 40, weigh 220 and stand 6'0". You and fellow LB Chris Marve probably make up the best LB tandem in the state.

It's not all been a cakewalk for Brandon Boykin and his teammates at White Station though. There's no state championship since they've been there and nagging losses to Germantown that stay on their minds.

TN Prep Sports sat down with Chris recently to ask him a few questions about rivals, the season and his future....

TPS: Who are the Spartans looking forward to playing the most in 2006?

Brandon:I think Germantown, mainly because they're a perennial power and they're the only team we haven't beaten.

TPS: What would you attribute the team's quick start this season to the most?

Brandon: I think strength and conditioning more than anything else. We are starting to realize games are won and lost in the 4th quarter.

TPS: Was there any unfinished business that you all left on the field last year that you wanna finish this year?

Brandon: We've been 8-4 the past two seasons, knocked out of the playoffs in the second round three straight years and I do not as of yet have a scholarship offer. There is PLENTY of unfinished business.

TPS: Have you set any personal goals for 2006?

Brandon: I want to improve on 75 tackles and 2 sacks from a year ago. The team goal is a state title.

TPS: What have you been working on the most personally to improve?

Brandon: I have worked hard in the film room, watching other teams and getting more from the film. I have also worked real hard on getting in shape. I'm ahead of where I was last year, but I can always improve some more.

TPS: Did you attend any summer camps in the pre-season?

Brandon: I attended the scout.com All American Combine, where I placed in the top 5 LB team and ran a 4.56 40 time. I also had a 34' vertical.

I went to the Clemson Nike Camp. I did 20 reps of 185 lbs and had a 75 sparq rating there.

I also attended the Vanderbilt football camp. I wanted to just keep myself on track with them for a scholly.

TPS: You mentioned Vandy prominently. Who else do you like in the college world?

Brandon: My favorites are Stanford, Vandy, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Alabama. It would really be cool to play with (fellow LB) Chris Marve at Vandy.

TPS: Is there anyone in college or the pros you try to pattern your game after?

Brandon: I don't have just one guy, but I try to take a lil from Al Wilson, Joey Porter and Roy Williams.

TPS: If you could be anybody in Hollywood or pro sports who would it be and why?

Brandon: Al Wilson, because he's my favorite LB and plays for my favorite NFL team. Plus he's just nasty on the field!
