Alcoa Tornadoes Secure Their Position

Alcoa (7-2, 6-0) assured themselves an undefeated Region record Friday night in 2-2A. They defeated Oliver Springs 62-7.

The game opened up with Kyrus Lanxster taking the initial kick-off all the way back untouched for a TD. Shortly after that, QB-Randall Cobb hits Brian Sommer for another TD. In the first quarter Alcoa pretty much set themselves up to coast the rest of the night.

Right after Sommer's score, Troy Hodge turned Bobcat's fumble into an 11-yard touchdown run. Chris Shiverdecker puts his touch on the first quarter by shoving his way through the middle of the line for a 15-yard touchdown. Before the first quarter ended, Cobb hit Lanxter on a 15-yard pass to put the Tornadoes up 35-0 at less than 12 minutes into the game.

Alcoa had 15 backs carry the ball on its way to 304 yards on the ground. Shiverdecker lead with 100 yards on 9 carries.

The second and third quarters were just like the first. Shiverdecker added another TD run from 25 yards out early in the second, and Bart Hicks dove in from the one to make it 49-0 at the half.

The second half was a chance for Alcoa to get some of their younger players in so that they could get some playing time.

The Tornadoes last lost in a region contest was to Oliver Springs in 2003, but it doesn't look like that'll be happening again soon.

Looking Ahead

Alcoa Hosts the Warriors of Booker T. Washington this week for a surprisingly tough match-up.

The Tornadoes come into the last final regular season game of 2006 at 7-2, ranked #1 in Region 2, 2A and having already clinched the Region 2 title.

BTW is also ranked highly in the 2A AP rankings after an impressive if not unexpected showing through 9 games at 9-0 and 6-0 in their region. They presently carry a strength ranking of 8th.
