Team Preview: Knoxville Carter

After a solid 2007 season and a region championship Carter Coach Heath Woods looks to repeat as region champion in 2008 with hopes of moveing further into the playoffs. Find out what you can expect from the Carter Hornets in 2008.

In 2007, the Hornets had a great season with a overall record of 7-3 and an undefeated region record leading to a region championship. With six starters returning on offense and eight returning the on defense the Hornets look to have a strong chance to repeat as region champs.

Offensively Carter will look to find a quarterback between Landry Stanton (5-11, 180 pounds) and senior Alan Michael Sprinkle (5-11, 150 pounds). Stanton and Sprinkle will both be making the move to quarterback from wide receiver. Since both have the ability to play receiver look for either player to contribute at that spot for certain. At the receiver position expect senior Alex Badgett (6-2, 170 pounds) to have a big year in 2008.

The Hornet ground game will be lead by a stable of backs including junior tailback Shannon Meady (6-0, 178 pounds), senior Caleb Grubb (5-11, 180), and senior fullback Cody Wilson (5-10, 205 pounds). Coach Woods expects Meady to step up this season and have a big year. The backfield will be looking for a big group upfront to pave the way. All though the offensive line looks to have some holes to fill they seem to have some good leaders in Zack Smith (6-0, 250 pounds) and Nick Smith (6-4, 270 pounds). This is one area the Hornets coaching staff hopes to get more experience during the preseason and ready for the 2008 season.

On the defensive side of the ball there will be a lot of young guys playing up front. The return of Zack Smith and Nick Smith will help greatly on this side of the ball as well, but they will help groom in some new players. The linebacker crew will be led by Caleb Grubb and Cody Wilson. These two hope to use their experience and size to fill up holes throughout the season. The secondary will rely on Alan Michael Sprinkle, Alex Badgett, and Shannon Meady to help shut down the passing lanes.

The Hornets have made a significant turnaround in their overall program over the last decade. They have become the team to beat in region one. Fans can expect the same thought this season as Carter looks to be the top dog once again in the region. The Hornets have a very tough start to the 2008 season with three consecutive road games including trips to Bearden, South Doyle, and Claiborne County. Things don't get too easy when the Hornets come home as they face off with perennial 3A power Austin East.
