There is no better way to begin the early part of the regular season than a good old fashioned rivalry. Learn more about some of the top teams across the state battle this week in some key match ups statewide.

Game One: Clash of the Titans

Alcoa vs. Maryville

Fans should expect a great game in a match up with two teams that have won four consecutive state championships within their respective classifications. However, Maryville (Tenn.) has been able to dominate this series and thus become champions of Blount County. Coach Gary Rankin and his Tornadoes hope to change that this Friday night.

The Tornadoes led by a very young and talented group of players hope continue their dominant ways and break through Maryville. The Alcoa (Tenn.) Tornadoes led defensively by defensive back Sam Thompson hope to be able to shut down a strong and balanced Maryville (Tenn.) offensive attack. Look for big plays by young players like junior Tyler Robinson. Robinson, a junior tight end/defensive end, should be a big time prospect to watch for the class of 2010. Also fans can expect to see big things from sophomore running backs Taharin Tyson and Daryl Warren.

Coach George Quarles has compiled an impressive record of 125-9 in nine seasons at Maryville (Tenn.). The people of Maryville expect big things and have really set the bar high for all Tennessee schools. Led by senior defensive end Justin Smith, junior running back Buddy Jones, and junior quarterback Phillip Juhlin the Rebels hope to extend their streak to 62 consecutive victories. The Tornadoes need to look out for the big play and especially the trick play that will happen at some point in the game.

PrepTennessee.com Fearless Prediction:

If there has been any season that the Tornadoes seem to have all of the advantages and the best chance to knock of Maryville it is this season. The combination of great young players and added depth will give Alcoa a better chance to pull off a big time win against Maryville this season. Look for a classic thriller that will come down to the play in the fourth quarter. After all of the intangibles look for the Rebels to barely escape with win number 62. Maryville 21 Alcoa 20

Game Two: The Old Rivalry

Marion County vs. South Pittsburg

This is one of the oldest rivalries in the state and not to mention one of the toughest. The Pirates led by running back David Jones, 6-0, 205 pounds hope to start the defense of their state title with a big time win to solidify their dominance of Marion County. Fans should look for Jones and the Pirates to have a big game and rack up some good yards.

PrepTennessee.com Prediction:

Fans can expect running back David Jones to have a big night in this rivalry game. The Pirates will be able to start off the 2008 season and defense of their state title in a big way. Look for this hard hitting game to show off the difference in talent between these two big rivals. South Pittsburg 35 Marion County 7

Game Three: The Battle for The Bishop's Cup

Pope John Paul II vs. Father Ryan

This is a very new rivalry but it is quickly becoming one of the most popular in the mid state. The Knights from Hendersonville-Pope John Paul II hope to be able to reclaim The Bishop's Cup, but will have a tough task ahead. The Knights have lost this match up two years in a row and are very eager to steal some thunder in the Nashville Catholic community with a big time win on the road. Led offensively by Wesley Tate, 6-2, 205 pounds the Knights hope to establish their offense early and take the lead. Tate is a big bruising back with quick feet who has the ability to make a strong five yard run, but also has the ability to take it the distance in an open field.

The Irish from Nashville-Father Ryan will have a bigger challenge on their hand this week with the Knights. The Irish will need big time play on defense from senior linebackers Anthony Wilson, 6-1, 195 pounds, and Tagbo Obi, 5-11, 195 pounds. The Irish hope to fill the running and passing lanes with safety Mitchell Stoffer, 6-0, 185 pounds. On the offensive side of the ball offensive guard Sean Conway, 6-3, 285 pounds hopes to lead the offensive line and help junior quarterback Trey McPhail, 6-3, 200 pounds make big plays.

PrepTennessee.com Prediction:

The Knights roll into this game after a close loss to Greenbrier in week zero and hope to turn things around. Coach Jeff Brothers, of Pope John Paul II, has a much improved squad and hopes to show that on Friday. The Irish led by Coach Bruce Lussier hope to make it three years in a row with the Bishop's Cup. Look for the Irish and Knights to have a good old fashioned battle for one of the most coveted trophies in the mid state. Father Ryan 28 Pope John Paul II 14

Game Four: The Williamson County Streak

Brentwood Academy vs. Ravenwood

The Eagles of Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy hope to continue their dominance of Williamson County schools this Friday night as they visit Brentwood-Ravenwood. The Eagles led by offensive guard Alex Bullard, 6-4, 290 pounds and tight end Thad McHaney, 6-4, 240 pounds look to improve to 31-0 against Williamson County schools. Fans should expect to see big things out of these two players plus look for class of 2010 defensive tackle Ishmael Lewis to have a big game.

The Raptors hope they can bounce back after their week zero loss to Goodpasture. Coach Brian Rector and his troops will try to balance their offense and get the ball to wide receiver Bo Gilroy. The offense will need to have time to get the ball to Gilroy and will depend on offensive tackle Logan Massengale and company to protect. The Raptors could have a good chance to compete in this game with an aerial attack.

PrepTennessee.com Prediction:

The Eagles hope to extend their winning streak in the county, but may be facing a very tough challenge in Ravenwood. Last week Franklin-Independence took Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy late into the fourth quarter by utilizing their passing game and moving the ball through the air. The Raptors will need to find a way to get the ball to playmaker Bo Gilroy in order to help their chances to win. Brentwood Academy 28 Ravenwood 21
