Week 2 Class 5A Region IV Insider

Leander Vandegrift (1-0) at Abilene Cooper (1-0): Vandegrift has a tough road trip on the schedule this week as they have to travel up to Abilene to take on a much improved Cooper squad at Shotwell Stadium. Vandegrift rolled past Elgin 55-30 as RB Travis Brannan ran for 263 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Vipers. Cooper had themselves a strong start as they went on the road and knocked off a highly thought of Wichita Falls Rider squad 38-32. RB Devin Johnson topped the 200 yard mark rushing and two touchdowns to pace the Cougars. They’ll put up a strong fight, but Vandegift is a top ten team in 5A and they’ll wear the Cougs down and get a big road victory. Stepp’s Pick: Leander Vandegrift by 10

Austin LBJ (1-0) vs. Cedar Park Vista Ridge (1-0): LBJ travelled up to the DFW area and put a big knot on the head of Fort Worth Wyatt 55-0. The Jaguars were led by their defense that held Wyatt to just 108 yards, DE Johnnie Williams is the headliner for a fast defense. While the LBJ offense has a ton of speed as well and they feature plenty of balance. They’ll matchup once again with a Vista Ridge squad whom they eliminated from the playoffs in 2014. Vista Ridge started the season off with an easy 49-8 win over Seguin, the Rattlers threw up over 500 yards of offense led by QB Matthew Snow. Snow had 269 total yards and three touchdowns to lead the VRHS attack. Vista Ridge will be highly motivated to avenge the playoff loss, expect an exciting game but edge to the team with a chip on their shoulder. Stepp’s Pick: Cedar Park Vista Ridge by 5

Alamo Heights (1-0) at San Antonio O’Connor (0-1): Alamo Heights served notice they’d be a contender in 27-5A once again with a blowout 55-14 win over New Braunfels. The Mules used a balance offensive attack to roll past NBHS, QB Jack Woodland was the key throwing for 262 yards and three touchdowns in the win. They’ll get more a test this week against O’Connor who will be out to prove last week’s 42-19 loss to San Antonio Reagan. The Panthers have plenty of skill talent, they just need to cut down on the mistakes. Defense is a concern and going up against a loaded and brutally efficient Alamo Heights offense will spell another long night with lots of points and yards. Stepp’s Pick: Alamo Heights by 11

Laredo Martin (1-0) at Laredo Alexander (0-1): One of the big surprises in South Texas was Laredo Martin, who knocked off Corpus Christi Ray 22-7. The Tigers defense was up to the task in containing a solid group of skill kids from Ray. The Tigers will have a tougher test this week against a very good Alexander squad that has eyes on a 29-6A title. The Bulldogs dropped a close one to Alice, but their high powered spread offense and overall team speed will be a little too much for the upstart Tigers. Stepp’s Pick: Laredo Alexander by 17

Gregory-Portland (1-0) at Corpus Christi Carroll (1-0): One of the better rivalries on the Coastal Bend is the “Battle of the Bridge” as the top 6A program in Corpus takes on one of the better 5A teams in the area. Carroll rolled past Miller 42-6 as Noah Lisk ran for 111 yards and two scores as the Tigers cruised past an overmatched opponent. The Tigers defense will have their hands full with a potent Gregory-Portland ground game led by RB Blaine Monroe who ran for 246 yards and two scores I the Wildcats win over 4A power El Campo a week ago. This week’s matchup, which is the game of the week in the area will come down to which defense is capable of rising the occasion. Carroll has won the last two meetings and although this year’s game will be close, CHS ties the series up. Stepp’s Pick: Corpus Christi Carroll by 3

Elgin by 14 over Bastrop

Somerset by 8 over San Antonio Harlandale
