DUNCANVILLE - After relinquishing a 41-20 third quarter lead the Mesquite Horn Jaguars (2-0) escaped Panther Stadium with a hard fought 44-41 win over the Duncanville Panthers (0-2) as Mark Reyna drilled a 38 yard field goal as time expired to lift HHS to their first win of the season.
Horn built their 41-20 lead on the strength of Oklahoma verbal commit QB Chris Robison who threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns. His two third quarter touchdown passes to Baylor verbal commit WR Jared Atkinson (seven receptions 166 yards two touchdowns) staked Horn to the 21 point lead.
Things didn’t start well for Horn who quickly got behind 14-0; Duncanville took the opening kick and marched right down the field, mainly using their ground game and taking the lead on a five yard touchdown pass from QB Mike Myers to WR DeMario Green. Duncanville’s defense came out fired up as they had back star DL Marcell Southall who missed the season opener. They forced a HHS punt and Duncanville again marched to the end zone extending the lead to 14-0 on a two play drive capped by a 35 yard scoring toss from Myers to WR Odell Smith. The Panthers would force another punt and they appeared to be on the verge of blowing the game open moving to the Horn 33, but QB Myers was intercepted by Horn LB Chika Nwabuko. That turnover gave Horn the momentum they needed and the offense went work.
The first Jags score came right at the end of the first as Robison hooked up with Katrell Blakely for a 52 yard catch and run to cut the lead to 14-6. After exchange of turnovers and a Duncanville punt, Horn would cut the lead to 14-13 as Patrick Carter-Well scampered in for a three yard touchdown run.
Duncanville all-state kicker Eric Carrasco would miss a 44 yard field goal wide left, and Horn would take their first lead of the game before halftime as Carter-Wells would catch a nine yard touchdown pass from Robison making it 20-14 Mesquite Horn.
The team’s would exchange touchdowns early in the third quarter and with Horn leading 27-20, the Jags would put up the two touchdown passes from Robison to Atkinson to extend the lead to 41-20. Duncanville would claw their way back into the game starting early in the fourth as LaKeith Jones rumbled 39 yards for a touchdown making it 41-27. Duncanville DB Jaron Bryant would get his second interception of the night to give the ball back to DHS and Myers tossed the first of two fourth quarter touchdown passes to make the game 41-34. After a Horn punt Myers on fourth and four threw a touchdown toss of 27 yards to Jakari Brooks to make it 41-41 with just 35 seconds remaining.
However that was plenty of time for Horn who had all three timeouts. After a short kickoff Horn would quickly move down the field to get into scoring range, a 20 yard run by Robison followed by an eleven yard pass from Robison to Atkinson with one second on the clock put Reyna in range. The kick was originally slated to be a 43 yard kick, but a substitution infraction on Duncanville off a time out moved the ball up five yards and Reyna drilled the kick through the uprights.
