Week 3 Class 5A Region IV Insider

Killeen (1-1) at Austin Vandegrift (2-0): Killeen will look to bounce back after a tough 34-10 loss to Round Rock a week ago. The Kangaroos speed all over the field will be an issue for the Vipers who do lack team speed. What Vandy lacks in speed they make up for in toughness up front and execution and that typically equals big yards for RB Travis Brannan. In last week’s 43-42 win over a feisty Abilene Cooper squad, Vandy had 660 yards of offense including 330 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Brannan also mixed in a touchdown reception as well as the Vipers offense was nearly unstoppable. Killeen will pose a tougher defensive challenge, but they aren’t as dangerous on offense as Abilene Cooper. Stepp’s Pick: Austin Vandegrift by 14

Seguin (0-2) at Lockhart (2-0): Lockhart was a surprise move south in realignment two years ago, the Lions took full advantage as they made a return to the postseason and even managed a playoff win. Now with a more experienced squad returning they have designs on making more noise and competing for a district title in 27-5A. The Lockhart Slot-T attack churns out yards and kills clock, thus protecting their vulnerable defense. In last week’s 56-7 win over Austin Crockett, Lockhart rolled up 489 yards on the ground. Seguin has above average athletes, but the Matadors have yet to find a way to win close games, expect another close one but Lockhart the last couple of years has learned to win these types of games. Stepp’s Pick: Lockhart by 5

San Antonio Burbank (0-2) vs. San Antonio Sam Houston (2-0): Unbeaten Sam Houston has eyes on a 10-0 regular season record and why not? The Hurricanes have adapted well to new HC Patrick Brown and with an experienced core led by QB Raymonte Prime they are poised to do some damage. In two games Prime has thrown for nine touchdowns and no interceptions. Burbank dropped a close one last week to San Antonio Kennedy 14-6, the Bulldogs offense has just 20 points in two games and that’s not a good recipe against the explosive Hurricanes attack. Stepp’s Pick: San Antonio Sam Houston by 27

Laredo Martin (1-1) at Laredo United South (1-1): Laredo Martin is off to a strong start and the Tigers are showing they can be a viable threat to make the playoffs. They opened up with an impressive win over Corpus Christi Ray and then played 6A playoff contender Alexander tough before falling 24-14. That will give them a lot of confidence heading into the matchup with United South who had no chance of being competitive in a 63-0 blowout loss to powerhouse Cibolo Steele. Look for Martin’s defense which has been very good early on to continue that trend this week. Stepp’s Pick: Laredo Martin by 11

Gregory-Portland (1-1) at Victoria West (2-0): Improved Gregory-Portland will have to rebound quickly after their rivalry game loss to Corpus Christi Carroll as they’ll trek north to take on District 30-5A favorite Victoria West. West has one of the state’s most dynamic weapons in QB Gamarquis Girdy who was a revelation in last year’s playoff run and has Warriors fans thinking they can compete for a Region IV title. VWHS rolled past San Antonio McCollum 42-7 as Girdy showed he’s not only capable of making plays with his feet (two rushing touchdowns) but he threw for 162 yards and two scores. Gregory-Portland will try and grind Victoria West down and slow the pace as they try and keep that explosive and speedy offensive attack off the field. Look for West to come out and try to strike quickly and make Gregory-Portland play their game. Stepp’s Pick: Victoria West by 10
