Week 6 Class 4A Insider

Andrews (4-1) at Big Spring (2-2): Andrews was undefeated and flying high headed into their showdown with Sweetwater, but the Mustangs were given a harsh dose of reality losing 56-34. The score was not indicative of how lopsided the game was as Andrews trailed 44-6 at the half. Big Spring’s offense couldn’t get going in a 13-10 loss to what had been a struggling Graham team. Big Spring is improved defensively, but do they have enough to contain what is a very good Andrews attack?? Stepp’s Pick: Andrews by 13

Huffman-Hargrave (2-2, 0-0) at Silsbee (4-1, 1-0): Huffman had a week off last week and they’ll need to play well to stay with an underrated but very strong team from Silsbee. Silsbee bounced back from their loss to West Orange-Stark with a big performance last week in their win over Little Cypress-Mauriceville, the headliner is Texas A&M commit OL Patrick Hudson. His ability up front along with Silsbee’s speed at the skill spots will be the big factors in this matchup. Stepp’s Pick: Silsbee by 15

LaVernia (1-3) at Geronimo Navarro (4-0): New HC Brandon Layne’s squad has struggled against a tough early season schedule and taking on Navarro and the Slot-T offense is a tall order. The last two weeks the Bears have fallen to LaGrange and Sinton, both of whom are in the 4A Division II Top 10. They’ll get another shot this week as unbeaten Navarro is a Top 10 squad. Navarro ripped past an outmanned Comfort squad 49-12 as the usually ground oriented Panthers threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns. Expect Navarro to go back to what they do well and that’s run the football a LOT. Stepp’s Pick: Geronimo Navarro by 17

Caldwell (2-3) at Mexia (3-1): Caldwell had a very impressive win last week as the Hornets blew past Rockdale 57-35 as QB Joseph Crnkovic threw for five touchdowns, while RB Keyshawn Chambers ran for 133 yards and a score, he hauled in two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff for a touchdown to lead the explosive attack. They’ll hook up with a very athletic Mexia squad coming off a bye week. The Blackats dropped their last outing to Waco LaVega 41-21 two weeks ago, they’ll look to star QB Jaylen Gipson to lead the way, he’s one of the most dynamic playmakers in all of Central Texas. Mexia’s speed and a full two weeks to prepare for Caldwell will be the key to a MHS win. Stepp’s Pick: Mexia by 9

Yoakum (3-2) at LaGrange (4-1): New HC Bo Robinson has his young Bulldogs playing well after last week’s 24-22 win over Gonzales. The Bulldogs were led by QB Tyron Brooks who ran for a score and threw for another and the defense came up big late to preserve the win. LaGrange which hadn’t lost a regular season game since 2013 took it on the chin in a big way last week suffering a stunning 41-22 loss to Fredericksburg. The Leopards defense has been struggling and that’s a concern, but they do have one of the state’s top playmakers in J.K. Dobbins. He’s a major difference maker and leads the Leopards past a young but talented Yoakum squad. Stepp’s Pick: LaGrange by 12
