SAGINAW - After a disappointing loss last week to Azle, the Saginaw Boswell Pioneers (4-1, 1-1) were facing a must win and BHS rose to the occasion with a big 44-38 win over Denton (3-2, 1-1) in District 5-5A play on Friday.
Boswell was led by QB Anthony Ramirez who threw for 116 yards and two scores, while also rushing for 144 yards and a touchdown. Denton got big games from RB Xavier Scott who ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns and WR Emerson Espinoza who had seven catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. The biggest play of the night however, was made by the Boswell defense as LB Hunter Harp’s one handed 30 yard interception return for a touchdown to break a 31-31 tie and give the Pioneers the momentum needed to hang on.
The game was a back and forth affair all night, with Boswell forcing a three and out on Denton’s first drive. That stop set up BHS to take a 7-0 lead on a one yard run by Damon Williams, Denton responded quickly scoring on a 45 yard run by Scott to tie the game at seven. Boswell would jump back up by a touchdown on a trick play as the Pioneers executed a perfect double pass as Isaiah Mayfield caught a lateral from Ramirez and he found Jonel Reed wide open for a 44 yard touchdown and a 14-7 BHS lead.
After Denton answered with a 19 yard touchdown pass from Colt Atkinson to Chris Miller to tie the game at 14, Boswell would move all the way to the Denton one. Facing fourth and goal from the one Coach Abendschan elected to go for it and it paid off as Ramirez ran the run play fake and found blocking TE/LB Harp wide open for a one yard scoring pass making it 21-14 Boswell.
Denton would answer with a big play on the their third play on the next drive, as Atkinson hit Espinoza for a 77 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 21. Espinoza did a fantastic job of tip toeing down the sideline and outrunning the Boswell secondary for the score. Boswell did have enough time to march down and get a 25 yard field goal from Alex Del Valle right before halftime to go to the locker room ahead 24-21.
Boswell would open the second half with the ball and immediately started the second half where they left off in the first half marching right down the field and taking a 31-21 lead on a six yard touchdown pass from Ramirez to Mayfield. Denton would respond on their next drive going 90 yards and scoring on a one yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 31-28. Disaster struck on the ensuing kickoff as the Boswell returner lost the kickoff in the lights and failed to field the kick and Denton’s Caleb Osufoa would pounce on the loose ball. Denton would fail to take full advantage of the miscue and the Broncos had to settle for a 25 yard field goal from Robert Reyes to tie the game at 31.
Denton’s defense would hold on the next drive and it appeared the Broncos had seized momentum back. However on 3rd and long Denton QB Atkinson was pressured and tried to throw the ball away but Boswell LB Hunter Harp made a tremendous one handed catch for the interception and 30 yard return to give Boswell the lead for good at 37-31. After stopping Denton on the next drive, Boswell would salt the game away with a 15 yard touchdown run to make it 44-31. Denton would add a touchdown with less than a minute remaining to cut the lead to 44-38, but Denton would fail to recover the onside kick and Boswell would hang on for the 44-38 win.
