Week 7 Class 3A Insider

Brownfield (4-0-1) at Denver City (2-3): Brownfield has designs on making some noise in the playoffs this year and with sophomore QB Jaelyn Nolan leading the way the Cubs have the firepower to get it done. They’ll take on long time rival Denver City who has struggled losing three in a row, the Mustangs love to keep the ball on the ground and they’ll try and keep the ball away from the explosive Cubs. Expect Brownfield to jump on DCHS quick and put the Mustangs in a bind early. Stepp’s Pick: Brownfield by 16

East Bernard (3-2) at Boling (5-0): Despite the slow start there’s no question East Bernard is one of the favorites to make a deep playoff run in 2015. The Brahamas have won three in a row, largely due to a balanced ground game led by Charles Chapman who is averaging over nine yards per carry. Boling loves to run the football as well, the Bulldogs rely on the Slot T offense which is a bear to prep for. Luckily for East Bernard they’ve had two weeks to prepare and they’ll have the Boling offense dissected. Stepp’s Pick: East Bernard by 14

White Oak (4-1) at Mineola (5-0): One of a slew of big time matchups in East Texas pits much improved White Oak against state title contender Mineola. White Oak had won their first four games before dropping their non-district finale to Bullard. The headliners for Mineola are Texas A&M commit OL’s Austin Anderson and Riley Anderson, but the ‘Jackets have some playmakers as well. Mineola drilled Omaha Paul Pewitt 42-14 as QB Jeremiah Crawford ran for three touchdowns. Mineola will get their biggest test of the season this week, but the big game experience and senior leadership will guide the way. Stepp’s Pick: Mineola by 11

Hitchcock (4-1) at Edna (2-3): One of the state’s big surprises in Class 3A has been the Hitchcock Bulldogs, HHS in the past has liked to throw the ball but they’ve moved to the Slot T offense and it has paid off big time in a 4-1 start. RB Nathaniel Walker is off to a fast start with over 500 yards rushing and eight touchdowns thus far. Edna has had some struggles early against a tough schedule and throw in the fact that the Cowboys made a deep playoff run and teams have gunned for EHS. The Cowboys have dropped two in a row, but they’ve played a very tough schedule. Give the edge to the Cowboys who are battle tested. Stepp’s Pick: Edna by 7

Coleman (5-0) at Post (5-0): One of the top matchups in West Texas features two undefeated teams who are flying a bit under the radar. After a big 2014 season many thought Coleman would struggle in 2015 but it’s been just the opposite as CHS has won their five games by at least 13 points. The Post Antelopes have been solid for several years but is this the year the “Bold Gold” busts through? It’s Post’s first 5-0 start since 1999; RB Cambry Gilbert ran for two scores and hauled in another touchdown two weeks ago in the 49-19 win over Slaton. Post has been pretty dynamic all year offensively, so expect a shootout and we are going to take Post in a small upset. Stepp’s Pick: Post by 3
