TheOldCoach Week 9 Class 2A Insider

Canadian (7-0, 2-0) at Stratford (7-0, 2-0): Canadian has continued their 23 game winning streak and it doesn’t appear the Wildcats are slowing down anytime soon after last week’s 38-0 win over Wellington. No team in Class 2A has the type of playmakers the ‘Cats have with QB Tanner Schafer and ATH Chance Cook leading the way. CHS will get their toughest test of the year this week with fellow unbeaten Stratford, the Elks are one of the few teams in the Panhandle not intimidated by the Wildcats mystique and they have an impressive resume of their own. Expect SHS to give Canadian their toughest test of the year, but even then don’t be surprised if Canadian pulls away in the second half. Stepp’s Pick: Canadian by 21

Hawley (6-1, 2-0) at Windthorst (5-2, 2-0): One of the big surprises in the Big Country has been Hawley, led by sophomore QB Quay Stokes HHS has been quite the story. The Bearcats got tested last week by a solid Anson squad but passed in a 20-15 win. They’ll have another major task on their hands this week as Windthorst stands in the way of Hawley clinching a spot in the playoffs. The Trojans had no trouble with Archer City in an easy 55-14 win, Windthorst will have a big edge in the trenches and that could prove to be the difference. Stepp’s Pick: Windthorst by 10

Bells (4-3, 1-1) at Blue Ridge (7-0, 2-0): Raise your hand if you had the Blue Ridge Tigers sitting at 7-0 before the season started! Anyone? OK, me neither but here we are with Blue Ridge in the midst of their best season in recent memory thanks in large part to an explosive offense led by WR Brevin Wiggins. Bells has an explosive offense of their own so don’t be surprised if the Panthers go score for score with BRHS. Blue Ridge has the look of a team of a bit of destiny right now, so take the Tigers to win a barn burner. Stepp’s Pick: Blue Ridge by 7

Mart (6-1, 2-0) at Crawford (7-0, 2-0): Powerful Mart has had to make some adjustments on the fly under a new HC but the Panthers have waded through ok as they are off to a 6-1 start with the one blemish being a ten point loss to Division II powerhouse Bremond. The Panthers have the speed and athletes to give teams fits, they are just very young this year. That could open the door for Crawford to make an impact, the Pirates have been outstanding in recent year’s but Coach Kelm’s squad hasn’t been able to break through quite yet. Crawford’s got a ton of senior experience and they’ve had this one circled on the calendar. Stepp’s Pick: Crawford by 8

Hamlin (4-3, 2-0) at Haskell (5-2, 1-1): After losing an outstanding group of seniors many had the Pied Pipers of Hamlin pegged for a down year. The start to the season was slow but after back to back wins to open district play Hamlin has their eyes set on another playoff push. Last week’s win over Petrolia gives HHS a leg up on the playoffs. They will have their hands full with Haskell who can ill afford another loss or their playoff hopes will be on edge. Hamlin will be going into a tough place in Haskell, Coach Benton will have his team ready and a young Hamlin squad will make mistakes that lead to a Haskell win. Stepp’s Pick: Haskell by 10
