TheOldCoach Week 10 Class 3A Insider

Brownfield (7-0-1, 3-0) at Shallowater (5-3, 3-0): Unbeaten Brownfield has a chance to make a real statement this week and show they can be a contender in what is a tough Region I. QB Jaylen Nolen leads an explosive and speedy Cubs attack that has playmakers all over the field. Their defense will be tested against the Mustangs ground and pound offensive attack. Don’t let Shallowater fool you, they are much better than their record indicates after playing a non-district schedule made up of almost all 4A schools. I expect Shallowater to control the tempo of the game and force what is still a young Brownfield squad into pressing and making mistakes. Stepp’s Pick: Shallowater by 10

Pilot Point (6-2, 1-2) at Pottsboro (8-0, 3-0): Few teams in the state have been as dominating as Pottsboro, the Cardinals closest game of the year was last week’s 35-0 win over Van Alstyne. Pottsboro is normally a team that likes to sling it around, so in last week’s rain storm the Cardinals ran for 333 yards as a team. Pilot Point seems to be the team most equipped to test PHS, they have the playmakers led by D’Covan Bailey who had over 200 yards of offense and a pair of touchdowns. The PPHS defense held Whitesboro to just 98 total yards in a 34-0 win. Look for this one to be close throughout Pilot Point has a chance to show they are still a contender after losing two straight. Pottsboro finds a way to win it late. Stepp’s Pick: Pottsboro by 10

Caddo Mills (8-0, 3-0) at Sunnyvale (7-1, 3-0): Caddo Mills has quietly put together an 8-0 start, but they haven’t really gotten a win of note. The Foxes have their chance this week as they tangle with Sunnyvale in what will likely decide the district title. CMHS pitched a shutout last week beating Waxahachie Life 20-0. Sunnyvale’s won seven of their first eight after they took down Commerce 35-0. The Raiders have an explosive offense and they’ve tested their team against much tougher competition. Stepp’s Pick: Sunnyvale by 9

Alpine (4-4, 2-1) at Sonora (5-3, 3-0): A deep West Texas matchup pits a pair of teams who struggled early on but seem to have righted the ship. Alpine’s won two in a row after dropping the district opener in surprising fashion. The Bucks will have to play their best game of the year to take down Sonora who played a brutal non-district slate once again, the Broncos have won their three district games by 19 points or more. Sonora has a huge edge in the trenches and they line up and just run it down Alpine’s throat in this one. Stepp’s Pick: Sonora by 21

Franklin (8-0, 4-0) at Lexington (5-3, 4-0): Powerful Franklin has crept up the polls all year and for some they’ve spent time as the top team in 3A Division II. The Lions get it done with a potent ground attack and a sound defense. FHS rolled past New Waverly 56-0 last week behind 428 yards on the ground. Lexington and their high powered spread attack will pose a challenge for Franklin, the Eagles blasted Hearne 70-6 and in the win their defense allowed just one first down. That performance will be real tough to duplicate, look for Franklin to control this one start to finish they are well ahead of anyone in this district. Stepp’s Pick: Franklin by 20

Stepp’s Fab Five Picks:

Scurry-Rosser by 12 over Waxahachie Life

Rockdale by 11 over Troy

East Chambers by 18 over Woodville

Comfort by 6 over Luling

Newton by 20 over Garrison
