TheOldCoach Week 10 Class 2A Insider

Canadian (8-0, 3-0) at Panhandle (6-2, 2-1): Another week and another totally dominating performance by the Canadian Wildcats who now have run their winning streak to 23 games after blasting previously undefeated Stratford 31-6. QB Tanner Schaefer and company are the headliners but the defense that Canadian has been playing has been special as well. It appears to be nothing more than a formality that Canadian will be making the long trek down to Houston to play for another state title at this point. Panhandle represents the toughest remaining regular season test for CHS, Panhandle is a solid, playoff caliber team that knocked off West Texas High 21-7 a week ago. However, the gap between Canadian and the rest of the state appears to be wide. Stepp’s Pick: Canadian by 31

Goldthwaite (6-2, 3-0) at Hico (3-5, 3-0): After a couple of down years, it appears Goldthwaite is back to its place as a contender in Class 2A. Goldthwaite and their ground based offense which utilizes the option was perfectly suited for last week’s sloppy conditions in a 29-7 win over Tolar. They’ll take on a surging Hico squad who after an 0-5 start have bounced back to be right in the thick of the district title chase. The Tigers played a brutal non-district slate, got some bumps and bruises but they appears to be coming together at the right time. Stepp’s Pick: Goldthwaite by 3

Crawford (8-0, 3-0) at Bosqueville (6-2, 3-0): Crawford probably saw the forecast for last week and rejoiced as the Pirates knew the conditions suited their offense in a big way and their tough, physical defense contained an always explosive Mart offense in a 21-0 shutout win last week. The Pirates will now look to lock the district title up against a tough Bosqueville squad who has looked strong in district play. The Bulldogs shutout Valley Mills 26-0 a week ago in the bad weather down in Central Texas. The forecast calls for me bad weather this week, so take Crawford who is more than happy with slowing the tempo down and grinding out another win. Stepp’s Pick: Crawford by 17

Johnson City (7-1, 4-0) at Mason (9-0, 5-0): It’s been quite the season for Johnson City winning seven of their first eight games, they’ll now get their biggest test of the season this week against unbeaten Mason. Johnson City has had two weeks to prepare for the Punchers, but will their wide open offense be slowed by the possible storms coming into the area? Mason has been on quite the roll since district play started, MHS is winning their district games by an average score of 52-3, pretty telling stat right there. Look for the Punchers to stay on a roll. Stepp’s Pick: Mason by 28

Springlake-Earth (8-0, 2-0) at Vega (8-0, 2-0): The top matchup in the Panhandle this week pits a battle of unbeatens looking for a district title. Traditional power Springlake-Earth has bounced back in a big way after a subpar 2014 season under alum and HC Israel DeLeon. The Wolverines rolled past Bovina 41-18 last week James Sandoval ran for two scores and Treylr Jackson hauled in two touchdown passes to lead the way. The Vega Longhorns have quietly established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the panhandle and for good reason rattling off eight straight including a dominating 27-0 win over Farwell. Neither team has really been tested so this is a major measuring stick on both sides, S-E seems to be a team trending the right way and that explosive offense makes the difference. Stepp’s Pick: Springlake-Earth by 6

Stepp’s Fab Five Picks:

Abernathy by 11 over Floydada

Blue Ridge by 16 over Valley View

Clarksville by 22 over Honey Grove

Lovelady by 7 over West Hardin

Seagraves by 22 over Smyer
