TheOldCoach Week 11 Class 3A Insider

Callisburg (7-2, 2-2) vs. Van Alstyne (6-3, 2-2): Callisburg and Van Alstyne both clinched playoff spots last week with Pilot Point’s close loss to Pottsboro. A week ago Callisburg dropped an overtime thriller to Whitesboro 27-20, while Van Alstyne drilled Farmersville 47-2. The winner of this game takes third place, while the loser is relegated to fourth playoff positioning. Stepp’s Pick: Callisburg by 2

Kemp (4-5, 2-2) vs. Palestine Westwood (7-2, 2-2): The Kemp Yellowjackets have a chance to complete a major turnaround and make the playoffs for the first time in a while, for years KHS has been a doormat but the improvement is quite evident. They’ll have their hands full with an underrated Westwood squad who is also fighting for their playoff lives. The winner of this game is in, while the loser has to hope a tiebreaker goes their way. Stepp’s Pick: Palestine Westwood by 10

East Chambers (9-0, 6-0) vs. Kirbyville (8-1, 6-0):The game in Southeast Texas everyone has been waiting on is finally here, two of the most dominating teams in 3A Division I clash for a district title and the top seed in the playoffs. East Chambers hasn’t played a game closer than 28 points all year and the Buccaneers have failed to allow more than 13 points in any single game. Talented Kirbyville will present a major test, the Wildcats have scored at least 44 points in the past seven games. They’ve been a buzz saw since dropping the season opener by three points to 4A Bridge City. This will be a knockdown drag out affair but we’ll take Kirbyville in a close one as they’ve played the tougher schedule. Stepp’s Pick: Kirbyville by 6

Hallettsville (7-2, 3-0) vs. Mathis (8-1, 3-0): A big matchup in South Texas is also for a district title as two long time powers square off. Hallettsville has had much more success recently but aside from blowing away lowly San Antonio Brooks HHS has played some close district games. Mathis has also played a couple of close games, while blowing Brooks out. So on paper this looks to be a very even matchup, the game is in Mathis and the Pirates Slot T offense could control the clock and tempo of this one. Stepp’s Pick: Mathis by 8

Cisco (8-1, 6-0) vs. Eastland (8-1, 5-1): An old rivalry in Eastland County that had been dormant for several years was renewed last year with plenty of vigor and animosity as both teams came into that showdown 9-0. Both teams are still plenty good at 8-1 and a share of the district title is on the line once again. It’s old school vs new school as Cisco relies on a tough running game and physical defense, while Eastland gets it done with a strong spread offense. Cisco had their way with Eastland a year ago, but this time Eastland finds a way to keep it close, but its real tough to bet against the “Big Dam Loboes” in a nip and tuck game. Stepp’s Pick: Cisco by 4

Stepp’s Fab Five Picks:

Muleshoe by 14 over Littlefield

Redwater by 21 over Mount Vernon

Grandview by 18 over Whitney

Coleman by 13 over Ballinger

Odem by 24 over Banquete
