Class 5A Area Round Insider

The bi-district round is in the books and now THEOLDCOACH looks ahead to the area round of the playoffs!! Today we take a look at Class 5A!

Region I

El Paso Chapin (10-1) vs. Canyon Randall (10-1) Saturday 4:00pm Grande Communications Stadium, Midland

Saginaw Boswell (10-1) vs. Burleson Centennial (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Dragon Stadium, Southlake

El Paso Del Valle (9-2) vs. Abilene Cooper (6-5) Friday 4:00pm Grande Communications Stadium, Midland

Denton (9-2) vs. Aledo (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Northwest ISD Stadium, Justin

Form held for the most part last week in Region I as all the favorites advanced with the notable exception of Burleson Centennial who avenged a blowout loss to Arlington Heights in the playoffs a year ago. Centennial will now have a chance to avenge a loss in the regular season to Boswell who escaped Birdville’s upset bid Saturday morning at AT&T Stadium. Out west favorites El Paso Chapin and Canyon Randall both took care of business, although Randall had to get things done in overtime against a feisty Plainview bunch. Denton had to wait until late Saturday night to get the win and despite getting dominated on the state sheet DHS held on late for a thrilling 12-11 win over Grapevine. There was no such drama for defending state champion Aledo who blasted Trimble Tech 76-0. Aledo rolled past Denton a year ago in the area playoffs and it could be more of the same this week.

Region II

Wylie (7-4) vs. Rockwall-Heath (8-3) Saturday 9:00pm AT&T Stadium, Arlington

Mansfield Summit (10-1) vs. Longview (9-2) Friday 7:30pm Eagle Stadium, DeSoto

Wylie East (10-1) vs. Mesquite Poteet (8-3) Saturday 10:30am AT&T Stadium, Arlington

Mansfield Lake Ridge (11-0) vs. Tyler John Tyler (8-3) Saturday 2:00pm City Bank Stadium, Forney

Wylie is rounding into form like the Pirates typically do this time of year, they were dominant in a 31-14 win over Frisco Wakeland last week and they come in as a favorite against Rockwall-Heath. The Hawks defense is among the best in the area and they’ll need another big effort this week to get back to the third round. It’s a pair of East Texas vs. Mansfield ISD games that highlight the Region II slate, Friday night Longview travels to DFW to take on 10-1 Mansfield Summit while on Saturday undefeated Region II favorite Mansfield Lake Ridge takes on red hot John Tyler. Summit has the look of a team that peaked too early in the season, while John Tyler has about as good a chance as anyone to take down what’s been a dominant squad from Lake Ridge. Wylie East and their explosive offense will seek to take down Mesquite Poteet for the second time this season in the final area round matchup.

Stepp’s Picks

Wylie by 8

Longview by 7

Wylie East by 11

Mansfield Lake Ridge by 5

Region III

Temple (10-1) vs. Houston Stratford (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Green Stadium, Bryan

Houston King (9-2) vs. Richmond Foster (9-2) Friday 7:00pm TDECU Stadium, Houston

Bryan (8-3) vs. Magnolia West (8-3) Friday 7:00pm Waller ISD Stadium, Waller

Nederland (8-3) vs. Richmond George Ranch (11-0) Friday 7:00pm Berry Center, Cypress

It’s a massive week of games in Greater Houston and last year’s state runner up Temple will certainly have their hands full with Houston Stratford who somehow has managed to fly under the radar despite having some of the most talented players in the state. Houston King got behind early against Beaumont Central but managed to escape, while Richmond Foster exercised some bi-district demons with their win over Elkins. Bryan went on the road and got a first round win last week, now the Vikings will look to slow down a potent Magnolia West attack. Unbeaten George Ranch will look to make it twelve in a row as the Longhorns appear destined for a playoff rematch with Temple.

Stepp’s Picks

Temple by 3

Richmond Foster by 12

Bryan by 7

Richmond George Ranch by 14

Region IV

Austin Vandegrift (9-2) vs. San Marcos (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Rattler Stadium, San Marcos

Victoria East (7-4) vs. Edinburg Vela (11-0) Saturday 2:30pm Buccaneer Stadium, Corpus Christi

Cedar Park Vista Ridge (9-2) vs. Lockhart (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Bobcat Stadium, San Marcos

Victoria West (10-1) vs. Mission Veterans Memorial (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Buccaneer Stadium, Corpus Christi

High powered Vandegrift will look to continue their march to a regional title this week on the road against upstart San Marcos. The Rattlers went on the road last week in San Antonio and got a win and now they’ll look to protect their home turf in front of what will be a raucous home crowd. Victoria East returned to the playoffs in style as they blasted Uvalde a week ago, they’ll have a big test this week against the top 5A team in the Valley in Edinburg Vela. Vista Ridge avenged a first round upset loss to Austin LBJ with a solid win, now their defensive discipline will get the ultimate test against the Slot-T offense of Lockhart. High flying Victoria West, who made it to the third round a year ago has designs on winning Region IV, they will be favored against Mission Veterans but the Patriots won’t be overwhelmed by the moment as they’ve taken on a lot of good teams this year including Odessa Permian.

Stepp’s Picks

Austin Vandegrift by 21

Edinburg Vela by 2

Cedar Park Vista Ridge by 9

Victoria West by 16

Region I

El Paso Burges (7-4) vs. Canyon (9-2) Friday 7:00pm Wigwam Stadium, Seminole

Wichita Falls Rider (7-4) vs. Everman (7-4) Friday 7:00pm Ranger Stadium, Fort Worth

El Paso Eastlake (10-1) vs. Lubbock Cooper (9-2) Friday 8:00pm Socorro ISD Student Activity Center, El Paso

Lake Dallas (9-2) vs. Burleson (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Pennington Field, Bedford

Much like in Division I, form held in Division II Region I for Class 5A as the favorites all won with one exception. That exception was El Paso Burges, a slight underdog against Ysleta the Mustangs got their first playoff win in two years. They’ll take on Canyon who escaped an upset bid from underdog San Angelo Lake View. One of the most evenly matched games on paper pits Wichita Falls Rider against Everman, there’s not much difference on paper between these two but Rider’s ability to stop the run could prove vital. Lubbock Cooper for the second straight week lost a coin toss, the Pirates this time have to go on the road a LONG way to take on El Paso Eastlake. Eastlake eliminated Cooper last year in the area playoffs. Lake Dallas and Burleson both were dominant in wins last week, now they meet up and the key in this one will be which defense can step up?

Canyon by 20

Wichita Falls Rider by 3

El Paso Eastlake by 2

Lake Dallas by 7

Region II

Frisco Lone Star (10-1) vs. Forney (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Clark Field, Plano

South Oak Cliff (8-3) vs. Marshall (10-1) Saturday 3:00pm Eagle Stadium, DeSoto

Lovejoy (8-3) vs. Terrell (10-1) Saturday 7:30pm Eagle Stadium, Allen

Lancaster (8-3) vs. Hallsville (7-4) Saturday 1:30pm TMF Rose Stadium, Tyler

Lone Star made an impressive playoff debut last week knocking off Prosper at AT&T Stadium, they’ll look to contain a Forney offense that last week topped the 70 point mark. South Oak Cliff and Marshall hook up in a playoff rematch from last year, the Bears needed a late field goal to knock off Mansfield Timberview while Marshall since losing their four year starting QB has struggled. The Mavericks just squeaked past Lindale a week ago, they’ll need a more consistent effort if they want to avenge last year’s playoff loss. Lovejoy’s defense, which doesn’t get discussed much was unbelievable last week in the Leopards domination of Frisco they’ll have to repeat that effort this week against a powerful Terrell rushing attack. Hallsville had the upset of the week beating defending state champion Ennis now the Bobcats tangle with a very fast and explosive Lancaster squad.

Stepp’s Picks

Frisco Lone Star by 14

South Oak Cliff by 6

Lovejoy by 3

Lancaster by 15

Region III

College Station A&M Consolidated (8-3) vs. Magnolia (10-1) Thursday 7:00pm Waller ISD Stadium, Waller

Crosby (11-0) vs. Fort Bend Ridge Point (8-3) Saturday 5:30pm NRG Stadium, Houston

College Station (9-2) vs. Houston North Forest (10-1) Friday 7:00pm George Stadium, Spring

Port Neches-Groves (9-2) vs. Angleton (6-5) Friday 7:30pm Eagle Stadium, Mont Belvieu

Defending regional champion Crosby will face a big test in the area playoffs this week as they will take on Ridge Point at NRG Stadium Saturday night. A&M Consolidated after a disappointing season a year ago has bounced back in a big way but they have a test against surprising Magnolia who is one of the feel good stories of the year in Greater Houston. College Station had to deal with the loss of their star QB in the first scrimmage of the year, but the Cougars have rallied in a major way and avenged an upset loss in the first round to Hutto. North Forest is the upstart team out of Houston ISD who knocked off perennial power Brenham, can they make it two in a row? PNG has a much better record than Angleton, but the Wildcats are battle tested this may be the best game in the region this week.

College Station A&M Consolidated by 7

Crosby by 11

College Station by 28

Port Neches-Groves by 3

Region IV

Cedar Park (11-0) vs. Kerrville Tivy (11-0) Friday 7:30pm Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex, Georgetown

Somerset (10-1) vs. Edcouch-Elsa (7-4) Friday 7:30pm Shirley Field, Laredo

Georgetown (8-3) vs. Boerne Champion (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Alamo Stadium, San Antonio

Corpus Christi Calallen (9-2) vs. Mission Sharyland (7-4) Friday 7:30pm Javelina Stadium, Kingsville

The headliner in Region IV is the battle of unbeatens as Cedar Park’s brutally tough defense matches up with the potent offense at Kerrville Tivy. The winner of this game establishes themselves as the Region IV favorite. Somerset and Edcouch-Elsa meet up in a battle of upstarts, Somerset went on the road and got an impressive win over Gregory-Portland. Surprising Georgetown will look to keep their season alive down in San Antonio against an explosive Boerne Champion offensive attack. Calallen will look to avenge their area round loss from a year ago to Mission Sharyland. The Wildcats at 9-2 look to be the team to beat at the bottom of the Region IV bracket.

Stepp’s Picks

Cedar Park by 19

Somerset by 6

Boerne Champion by 7

Corpus Christi Calallen by 17
