THEOLDCOACH CLASS 3A AREA ROUND INSIDER

DIVISION I

Region I

Muleshoe (10-1) vs. Breckenridge (7-4) Friday 7:00pm Memorial Stadium, Big Spring

Shallowater (8-2) vs. Bowie (6-5) Thursday 7:00pm Tiger Stadium, Snyder

Wall (11-0) vs. Littlefield (6-5) Friday 7:00pm Tiger Stadium, Snyder

Brock (11-0) vs. Denver City (6-5) Friday 7:30pm Kangaroo Stadium, Weatherford

The top four teams in this region look to be headed for what should be an incredibly entertaining regional semi-final round over Thanksgiving weekend. Muleshoe has the toughest test by far of the four favorites as they meet up with a dangerous Breckenridge squad who in the regular season took unbeaten Brock to the brink. Shallowater and their punishing ground game will take on upstart Bowie who got their first playoff win in years last week in thrilling fashion over Clyde. Wall, who also employs a brutally efficient rushing attack takes on Littlefield who won a thriller Saturday night over Brownfield, getting a late stop on a two point conversion to win. Brock takes on Denver City in the other area round game, it’s a busy week for Denver City fans in DFW as their volleyball team plays Thursday morning in the state semi-finals in Garland and then football team has a playoff game in Weatherford.

Region II

Pottsboro (11-0) vs. White Oak (9-2) Friday 7:30pm Terrell Memorial Stadium, Terrell

Sunnyvale (10-1) vs. Daingerfield (5-6) Friday 7:30pm Eagle Stadium, Lindale

Gilmer Harmony (7-4) vs. Callisburg (9-2) Friday 7:30pm Wildcat Stadium, Paris

Mineola (11-0) vs. Whitesboro (5-6) Friday 7:30pm Ford Stadium, Greenville

Are Pottsboro and Mineola on a crash course for a rematch in the regional final? Both teams were dominant in opening wins in bi-district, but Pottsboro has to be ready once again as the Cardinals have a major test against a strong White Oak squad who won the region two years ago. Mineola on the other hand has a little bit easier of a matchup against late surging Whitesboro. Sunnyvale got their first playoff win in school history a week ago, the Raiders will now take on tradition rich Daingerfield. Harmony and Callisburg meet up in an area round matchup featuring two mystery guests, which one will make a surprise trip to the Regional Semi-Finals?

Pottsboro by 15

Sunnyvale by 6

Gilmer Harmony by 4

Mineola by 22

Region III

Grandview (11-0) vs. East Chambers (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Tigerland Stadium, College Station

Cameron Yoe (10-1) vs. Malakoff (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Waco ISD Stadium, Waco

Teague (9-1) vs. Rockdale (9-2) Friday 7:30pm Crusader Stadium, Belton

Kirbyville (10-1) vs. West (10-1) Friday 7:00pm Bowers Stadium, Huntsville

Region III is the strongest region in all of Class 3A and the matchups this week certainly reflect that, there is no team remaining with less than a 9-2 record so the area games look like they’ll be incredibly entertaining. East Chambers was drilled in their season finale by Kirbyville and then they nearly were upset by Palestine Wetstwood to open the postseason, they’ll need to bring their A game to keep things competitive with unbeaten Grandview. Three time defending champion Cameron Yoe gets their first true test of the playoffs against underrated Malakoff who has just one loss. High powered Teague’s offense will get pushed by a stout Rockdale defense, the Tigers are hoping for a rematch with arch rival Cameron Yoe in the regional final. Finally its feel good story West going against red hot Kirbyville who has won ten games in a row since losing their season opener. Kirbyville’s speed and athleticism will be too much for West to handle in this one.

Stepp’s Picks

Grandview by 7

Cameron Yoe by 12

Teague by 3

Kirbyville by 20

Region IV

Luling (5-6) vs. Goliad (7-4) Friday 7:30pm Harlandale Stadium, San Antonio

Edna (8-3) vs. Mathis (9-2) Friday 7:30pm Memorial Stadium, Victoria

Hallettsville (9-2) vs. Hitchcock (9-2) Friday 7:30pm Traylor Stadium, Rosenberg

Aransas Pass (8-3) vs. Rice Consolidated (5-6) Friday 7:30pm Johnson Stadium, Karnes City

Region IV is full of some good matchups, most notably in the middle part of the bracket. Hallettsville looks to be making a push to emerge as the regional favorite, they won the region in 2012 and 2013. They could have a test with the speedy Slot-T offensive attack of Hitchcock. Edna and Mathis hook up in the other matchup, on paper these two look evenly matched but Edna may get a slight edge with the speed they have at the skill spots. Goliad and Luling are a pair of mystery guests in the area round, the Tigers have had a ton of off field distractions, but they’ve managed to remain a solid side. Aransas Pass on paper looks to be a significant favorite over Rice Consolidated who is fresh off an upset win over Comfort.

Goliad by 6

Edna by 3

Hallettsville by 10

Aransas Pass by 14

DIVISION II

Region I

Idalou (11-0) vs. Colorado City (5-6) Thursday 7:00pm Mustang Bowl, Andrews

Cisco (10-1) vs. Coleman (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Wood Stadium, Brownwood

Post (11-0) vs. Henrietta (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Bulldog Stadium, Clyde

Sonora (8-3) vs. Eastland (9-2) Thursday 7:00pm Mustang Bowl, Sweetwater

What a slate of games in this region, these are regional final caliber matchups in the area round!! Regional favorite Cisco will take on surprising Coleman in a battle of one loss teams, both teams love to run the football so expect a quick pace. Unbeaten Post has one of the state’s most underrated defenses in the state, they’ll look to slow up an explosive Henrietta attack, Henrietta’s only loss of the year was to Cisco early in district play. Defending regional champion Sonora doesn’t have the gaudy records of other teams, but the Broncos are dangerous. Their defense this week gets a major test with the explosive Eastland offense. Unbeaten Idalou looks like they should be in good shape to handle Colorado City who struggled for most of the regular season, the Wildcats will be heavily favored in this one.

Stepp’s Picks

Idalou by 24

Cisco by 10

Post by 6

Sonora by 3

Region II

Howe (10-1) vs. West Rusk (10-1) Friday 7:30pm City Bank Stadium, Forney

Leonard (5-6) vs. Omaha Paul Pewitt (7-4) Friday 7:30pm Patriot Stadium, Pattonville

Arp (6-5) vs. Lone Oak (5-6) Friday 7:30pm Van Memorial Stadium, Van

Waskom (11-0) vs. Gunter (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Parker Field, Mount Pleasant

Waskom, thought by many to have a down year this year has been nothing short of fantastic in 2015. In fact, the unbeaten Wildcats have been more dominant this year with a young team than last year. District rival West Rusk who was impressive in their bi-district opener matches up with fellow 10-1 Howe, Howe has a lot more playoff experience but can they keep up with the explosive Raiders attack? Paul Pewitt is a quiet contender at 7-4, the Brahamas needed some time to adjust to their new coach and system but they really have started to emerge. Arp had an upset win a week ago, they should be heavily favored against Lone Oak who may have difficulty containing the Tigers speed.

Stepp’s Picks

West Rusk by 5

Omaha Paul Pewitt by 14

Arp by 18

Waskom by 16

Region III

Dublin (5-6) vs. Corrigan-Camden (7-4) Friday 7:30pm Buffalo Bison Stadium

Jarrell (11-0) vs. Crockett (8-3) Friday 7:30pm Goat Stadium, Groesbeck

Newton (7-4) vs. Marlin (6-5) Friday 7:30pm Wildcat Stadium, Palestine

Franklin (11-0) vs. Clifton (6-5) Friday 7:30pm Panther Stadium, Waco

Unbeaten Jarrell is considered an underdog by many in their matchup with 8-3 Crockett, its not a surprise as Crockett has a big time offense that can on just about anyone. Jarrell however strikes me as a team of destiny in a way, so give us the Cougars to advance. Regional favorites Newton and Franklin are apparently on a collision course for a big third round matchup, Newton meets up with former power Marlin who is back in the playoffs and back in the second round after a hiatus. Franklin rolled past an outmanned opponent in the first round and it appears Clifton may be in for the same fate. Dublin pulled off an upset last week over a district champion in Blooming Grove, they’ll try and contain a speedy Corrigan-Camden squad who struggles on defense but can score plenty of points.

Stepp’s Picks

Corrigan-Camden by 11

Jarrell by 2

Newton by 18

Franklin by 31

Region IV

East Bernard (9-2) vs. Kingsville Academy (8-2) Friday 7:30pm Matador Stadium, Seguin

Blanco (11-0) vs. Taft (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Gustafson Stadium, San Antonio

Odem (11-0) vs. Tidehaven (7-4) Friday 7:30pm Cowboy Memorial Stadium, Edna

Hebbronville (5-6) vs. Boling (10-1) Friday 7:30pm Veterans Memorial Stadium, Beeville

The biggest game by far in this region this week is in San Antonio as unbeaten Blanco and their fantastic defense takes on high powered one loss Taft. Blanco’s been in a ton of big games recently and that playoff experience could pay off big this week. East Bernard, who has won nine straight since dropping the first two games of the season shouldn’t have much trouble with Kingsville Academy. Undefeated Odem started out slow last week but the Owls got their offense going and rolled to a win, they shouldn’t have much trouble with Tidehaven. That sets up what should be a fun regional semi-final as Odem could pair up with Boling and their Slot-T offensive attack.

Stepp’s Picks

East Bernard by 34

Blanco by 11

Odem by 26

Boling by 21
