ARLINGTON - Perennial powers Allen (13-0) and Denton Guyer (10-3) met to start the 2015 regular season and their paths crossed in different ways on Friday at AT&T Stadium. Both teams rose to the occasion in different ways in punching their ticket to the Class 6A State Quarter-Finals in dispatching well thought of opponents.

In the early game, Guyer used a rushing attack that churned out 435 yards to escape a major challenge from San Angelo Central (11-2) in a 35-27 win. The Wildcats with the game tied at 21 in the fourth quarter, rolled the dice and decided to go for it on 4th and goal from the three and QB Shawn Robinson hooked up with freshman WR De’Vion Harmon for a three yard touchdown to give Ryan the lead for good at 28-21. RB Myron Mason appeared to put the dagger in the Bobcats with a 75 yard touchdown run to make it 35-21, but Central showed fight and after a big kickoff return Brennen Wooten tossed a touchdown pass to get Central back in it at 35-27. After not recovering an onside kick, the Bobcats got a stop and with less than a minute left moved 31 yards to the Guyer 29 but two last chance heaves into the end proved unsuccessful and Guyer escaped with a well earned win.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap Allen won their 56th straight win with a convincing 36-11 win over Arlington Martin (10-3). The story of the night was the Allen defense holding Arlington Martin to just three points through three quarters. The vast majority of the Warriors yards came in the fourth quarter well after the game was decided. Leading 3-0 in the second quarter, defense and special teams turned the tide for the Eagles. DE Levi Onwuzurike tackled Nick Smith in the end zone for a safety to make the score 5-0, then Jaylon Jones would return the ensuing free kick 86 yards for a touchdown and Allen would lead 12-0. Leading 15-3 in the third, QB Mitchell Jonke would score on a 12 yard run to make the score 22-3 and the early in the fourth Jonke hooked up with Camden Harrison for a 36 yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 29-3 and effectively end the competitive portion of the game.

Denton Guyer will take on the winner of tomorrow’s game between Arlington Lamar and Mansfield, that game will be played at Dragon Stadium in Southlake next Saturday at 2pm. Allen, will take on the winner of Denton Ryan-Amarillo Tascosa, that game could be played Saturday or Monday at Bivins Stadium depending on the weather.
