THEOLDCOACH CLASS 6A STATE SEMI-FINAL INSIDER

DIVISION I

Allen (14-0) vs. Austin Westlake (13-1) Saturday 1:00pm McLane Stadium, Waco

Galena Park North Shore (11-3) vs. Converse Judson (13-1) Saturday 2:00pm NRG Stadium, Houston

Unbeaten Allen kept their 57 game winning streak alive with a 48-27 win over previously undefeated Denton Ryan last week. QB Mitchell Jonke accounted for five touchdowns and RB Kirby Bennett led the way with 209 yards on the ground, Allen’s defense led by Jaylon Jones, Anthony Taylor and Levi Onwuzurike contained the typically explosive Ryan passing attack as well. The Eagles get a big test this week with Westlake, led by Texas commit QB Sam Ehlinger and coached by former Southlake Carroll HC Todd Dodge. Allen’s winning streak, depth in the trenches and speed on defense will be too much for Westlake in this one. On the other side, surging Judson led by a ferocious defense takes on another hot team in North Shore. NSHS since their slow start has gotten things together, the Mustangs rolled past Dickinson 45-14 behind a defense that allowed negative thirteen rushing yards and had three interceptions. LSU commit DB Eric Monroe is a player to keep an eye on for the Mustangs. Judson has a big time defensive unit as well with Texas A&M commit Alton Robinson anchoring a group that’s outstanding on all three levels. LB Xavier Morris is very underrated as well, but it’s the Rockets offense that’s gotten cooking lately that makes them dangerous. In last week’s 38-24 win over Smithson Valley, sophomore QB Julon Williams accounted for over 200 yards of offense and three touchdowns. Judson has a few more playmakers and appears to be a bit more dynamic than North Shore and as long as they don’t turn the ball over I like their chances.

DIVISION II

Mansfield (12-2) vs. Lake Travis (14-0) Saturday 2:00pm Waco ISD Stadium, Waco

Katy (14-0) vs. Cibolo Steele (14-0) Saturday 2:00pm Alamo Stadium, San Antonio

Maybe the most impressive win of the weekend was Mansfield’s complete destruction of a very good Denton Guyer squad 44-7, we all know about RB Kennedy Brooks but the Mansfield defense rose to the challenge and completely dominated the Guyer offense. This week the challenge is undefeated Lake Travis, the Cavaliers defense has been tremendous all year but the offense led by QB Charlie Brewer got untracked last week in a 45-28 win over Rockwall. Lake Travis has the playoff pedigree and these seniors are eager to avenge a semi-final loss to Cedar Hill two years ago, Mansfield is overall very young so expect the more experienced Cavaliers to prevail. The game of the week in the state is obviously unbeaten Katy vs. Steele, these two played a classic at NRG a year ago with Katy winning in overtime and now the game is on Steele’s turf at Alamo Stadium. Katy’s defense has just been unreal all year with guys like Paddy Fischer and Collin Wilder leading the way, the Tigers have allowed just 55 points on the season in 14 games as they rolled past Manvel 35-17. Steele has been dealing with injuries notably to QB Xavier Martin and ATH Bryson Denley. Martin played in last week’s win over Schertz Clemens but was far from 100% while Denley is likely out again this week. Steele’s defense led by Mark Jackson has been tremendous, they’ll need another big effort this week as points will be tough to come by.

Stepp’s Picks

Lake Travis by 7

Katy by 5
