THE WORD: 2015 was a breakthrough season in a lot of ways for the Trailblazers as Coach Melton’s squad won their first playoff game in school history, before falling in the area playoffs to San Angelo Central. Now Americas with ten starters back on defense has their eyes set on a district title and a deeper playoff push in 2016. The offense starts with Fields, who is one of the state’s top running back recruits, he had 1658 rushing yards a year ago and 15 touchdowns. He currently holds offers from the likes of UTEP and New Mexico and is getting serious Big 12 and Pac 10 interest as well. The offensive line returns intact for the most part with Vasquez and Chisolm anchoring things. The big question marks are at quarterback and at receiver where there will be some youth. Keep an eye on talented speedster Henderson who could make an impact at multiple offensive positions for AHS. The defense returns almost intact led by Lindeman who Coach Melton says is “big time,” he had 88 tackles, eight sacks and three interceptions in a sensational junior season. Munoz was an all-district player as a sophomore, while Turner is a three year starter in the secondary who led the team with four interceptions a year ago. “Stability is the biggest key for us, we have a ton of experience back and a strong group of 38 seniors. That core gives us confidence we can compete for a district title and some playoff success,” said Melton.
