THEOLDCOACH takes a look at the 2016 Abilene Eagles who move into a DFW heavy district in the latest UIL Realignment!

ABILENE EAGLES

ENROLLMENT: 2,264.25 (7)

2015 RECORD: 7-4 6A Div. II Bi-District Playoffs

THE COACH: Del Cox

THE PLAYERS: Peyton Killam (Sr., QB), Abram Smith (Sr., RB), Raekwon Millsap (Jr., WR), Qua’Shawn Washington (Sr., WR/DB), Sammy Renteria (Sr., OL), Oscar Garcia (Sr., OL), Terrell Franklin (Jr., LB), Doak Holloway (Jr., LB), Coy McMillon (Sr., DL), Isaac Buenrrostro (Sr., DB), Devin Romero (Jr., LB), Ryland Madrid (Sr., DL), Jayton Voss (Sr., OL), Bryce McGough (Sr., WR)

THE WORD: There wasn’t a more heartbreaking loss in the 2016 playoffs in any classification than what happened to the Eagles a year ago.  Leading Arlington Lamar by a point with three seconds left, AHS allowed a 93 yard kickoff return to lose in stunning fashion 39-33.  The Warbirds will look to use that memory as fuel for a run in 2016, the last time Abilene High was in a DFW district the Eagles went 15-0 and won the 2009 Class 5A Division II state title.  The strength for the Eagles will certainly be at the skill positions where Smith, a 6’2 202 pound bull of a running back (nicknamed “Tank”) will be a key focus.  Washington, a two way starter along with Millsap gives the Eagles two big time weapons outside.  Killam is a true dual threat QB and pilots the AHS one back attack like a true veteran.  Three starters graduated on the offensive line so Renteria and Garcia will be counted on to provide leadership. The defense only returns three starters and will rely heavily on LB’s Franklin and Holloway to lead the charge. Coach Cox has concerns about the Eagles depth and he’s hopeful players from a 5-4 JV squad will mature quickly as the Eagles have their eyes on a district title.
