Matt Stepp gives a quick recap of the El Paso SQT!

El Paso Eastwood and El Paso Eastlake punched their first ever tickets to the State 7on7 Tournament with dominant performances at the El Paso SQT on Friday, check out the quick recap from THEOLDCOACH!

EL PASO – After coming up just short from making their first ever trip to the 7on7 State Tournament a year ago, the Eastwood Troopers left zero doubt as they avenged that loss to El Dorado a year ago with an absolute drilling of the Aztecs 41-14 in the semi-finals to advance to College Station for the first time in school history. The Troopers offense was a machine in their win over El Dorado, jumping out to a 26-6 halftime lead and never looking back.  “Our kids were hungry and motivated to get to state this year, we feel like to get down there and see that level of competition will be huge to prepare us for the playoffs,” said Eastwood HC Julio Lopez who spent the day in the end zone holding his young daughter and cheering his kids on with the rest of the coaching staff.  UTEP signee and former Eastwood Trooper, Richie Rodriguez coached the team.  Only Del Valle tested Eastwood, as the Conquistadores fell to the Troopers in a close 40-36 game during the day’s second pool play game.

The Eastlake Falcons the past two years have advanced to the third round of the playoffs, been competitive but faded in the second half.  HC JJ Calderon thinks this year’s group has a chance to be special and they showed flashes of that with a perfect 4-0 record and blowing through their opponents with an average margin of victory of 36.5 points.  Only Franklin stayed within 20 points of the Falcons losing 35-18.  “We’ve improved a lot as a program and being able to go to College Station and just matchup with the best teams in our great state means a lot, it’ll force us to raise our level of play and will be a huge benefit come this fall.

The El Paso SQT was once again sponsored by Fred Loya Insurance, because of the generous donation of Mr. Loya, the teams in the El Paso SQT only had to pay a ½ price entry fee of $150.00 vs. the normal entry fee of $300.00.
