QB Xavier Martin Leads Talented Cibolo Steele Team in 2016

After leading his team to the brink of the Class 6A Division II state title round last season, QB Xavier Martin is back for San Antonio powerhouse Cibolo Steele and ready to take the Knights the distance this time around.

Xavier Martin lived up to expectations as a junior, when he replaced Texas State Bobcats signee L.G. Williams as the signal caller for a Cibolo (Texas) Steele squad that had gone to the same 6A D-II semifinals in 2014.

Martin impressed at offseason camps and combines and backed up those performances with a stellar junior campaign as he accounted for more than 2,800 total yards of offense and 29 total touchdowns.

"Steele always boasts one of the top teams in the state and with Martin at the helm it should be right in the thick of the race again in 2016," said national analyst Greg Powers.

"Martin is an amazing athlete at the quarterback position. He has been clocked with a laser-timed 4.43-second 40-yard dash. He has committed to Texas Tech to play quarterback and if that position does not work out his speed could be utilized at a different position.

That being said, he was recruited to play quarterback and he has the skill set to do so. He is a bit under-appreciated as a passer, but just because he is a great athlete does not mean that he can't throw. He can."

Martin's numbers in 2015 back up that claim.

He threw for 2,110 yards, 21 touchdowns, and only three interceptions as he led Steele to a 14-1 record. He ran for 698 yards and eight touchdowns as he averaged more than seven yards per attempt.

Martin agrees with Scout's assessment that he should be feared as a passer.

"I feel like my biggest strength is my arm and elusiveness," Martin said. "People think I can't throw because I'm fast, but I feel more comfortable sitting back in the pocket than running." With his well-rounded game at the quarterback position, Martin should have Steele primed for another long postseason run in 2016.

Martin and Steele will start the season off with a bang playing games against San Antonio (Texas) Madison and Austin (Texas) Lake Travis.
