TheOldCoach 3A Week One Outlook

Josh Pratt takes a look at some of the top matchups in 3A for week one!

TOP GAME TO WATCH:

Cameron Yoe Vs. Bellville

There were some solid matchups to choose from to open up the 2016 Texas 3A high school football season, but this is the most intriguing one.  Cameron Yoe, which has played in five out of the last six state championship games, could be poised to make another run for a ring in 2016.  The Yoemen have question marks at quarterback and running-back, but a strong core of returning receivers should make the transition easier for others.  Bellville reached the region III finals last year before falling to eventual state champion West Orange-Stark, 42-3.  The Brahmas still have plenty of fire power left in the tank as RB/LB Mac Briscoe, the district MVP from a year ago, will be returning to lead the ground-heavy slot-t attack.

Josh’s Pick: Cameron Yoe by 3.

RUNNER-UP:

Idalou Vs. Shallowater

These two teams are traditional powers out of West Texas 3A.  At this point, it’s really unclear how strong each of these teams will be in 2016.  Idalou pretty much lost the house a season ago with only three starters returning from a 13-1 state semifinalist team.  Shallowater is somewhat in the same boat with only a total of five starters coming back.  However, the Mustangs also went through a coaching change in the offseason as Chad Terry from Plains is stepping in to take over for Kyle Maxfield, which is now at Brownwood.

Josh’s Pick: Shallowater by 7.

Breckenridge Vs. Cisco

The top game to watch out of West Texas this week will be Breckenridge versus Cisco.  The Buckaroos could end up being one of the top competitors to reigning state champion Brock out of 4-3A.  Breckenridge played Brock to a 3-point game in 2015.  It seems like every year the Loboes of Cisco are pulling out 10+ win seasons.  Expectations are always high within that program, and nothing will be changing in 2016.

Josh’s Pick: Cisco by 7.

Teague Vs. Caldwell

If you’re a Teague fan, you want to be challenged in your non-district schedule.  The Lions have been one of the more consistent programs in the region III area over the past few years, and games against teams like Caldwell should give Coach Osborn and his staff a good measuring point at where they stand.  The Hornets return over half of their team which advanced all the way to the 4A DII regional semifinals in 2015.

Josh’s Pick: Teague by 14.

Arp Vs. Tatum

Games like this are great for the opening week of the season.  Arp, which is ranked at the number three slot in our preseason poll, will have aspirations of competing for a state title in 2016.  Meanwhile, you have a larger 4A DII team like Tatum that had a rough go of it in 2015 as injuries piled up.  Long-time head coach Andy Evans stepped down at the end of the season, allowing a seasoned Craig Baker to take over the tradition rich program.

Josh’s Pick: Tatum by 3.

Honorable Mention:

Canadian Vs. Bushland - Canadian by 14.

East Bernard Vs. Hempstead - East Bernard by 10.

Childress Vs. Wellington - Wellington by 7.

Grandview Vs. Glen Rose - Grandview by 10.

Rockdale Vs. West - Rockdale by 10.
