5A Weekend Preview and Big Game of the Week

The Old Coach and Scout come together to preview the big games and players you need to know about in 5A for week two of Texas High School Football action...

TOC Big Game of the Week

Richmond Foster (1-0) @ A&M Consolidated (0-0)

This should be a tightly contested affair as District 27 (Foster) collides with District 18 (A&M Cons.). Foster heads into the game off of a hard fought win against Katy Taylor, while A&M Cons. had its game postponed due to lightning and storms in the area.

Last week Foster rode star Oklahoma Sooners commit CeeDee Lamb to fend off a 6A school and secure an 11-point victory. Lamb got the scoring started with a 91-yard touchdown reception and capped off the scoring with a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Foster QB Alex Ramart completed 11-of-18 passes but threw two interceptions and protection f the football will be key against a hungry defensive backfield.

The star of the show will obviously be Oklahoma State Cowboys commit Tyon Merchant, so this game could be a start of a rivalry for the two players on opposite teams in this tilt. Merchant is slated to play defensive back at OSU and could get the chance to match-up with Lamb in the Bedlam rivalry north of the Red River and he will almost certainly have his shot on Friday night. Merchant intercepted seven passes and blocked eight kicks last year.

Scout 300 Prospect Watch: Tanner McCalister

Rockwall Heath (0-1) @ West Mesquite (1-0)

Each week we will preview a game that is focusing in on a top-rated D1 talent and this week the focus turns to Rockwall-Heath, where Scout Texas High School Football Recruiting Analyst Gabe Brooks will be in attendance for this Thursday night game that is actually one of the strongest games in the state match-up wise.

Here's a look at some of the players who will be on the field for each team Friday night including of course or Scout Top 300 Player of the Week CB Tanner McCalister:

Rockwall Heath

West Mesquite

Texas vs. California

Westlake, Calif. (1-0) @ Aledo (1-0)

This week Aledo will play host to a team from California that is itching to show what California football is all about. Interestingly, Westlake will take in a portion of the USC vs. Alabama game as well at AT&T Stadium while in town, so the team will be treated to a whole Texas experience.

Aledo should be able to handle this game in front of its fans that will be itching to cheer on TXHSFB in the battle between the two states. The atmosphere in Aledo may not be as feverish as the games when say an opponent like Stephenville rolls into town, but you can bet the town will be closing down to come support and there will be a sea of Orange.

"They lost most of their top guys from last year," a special undercover California High School Football expert informed. "It is a rebuilding year for sure with some young talent, but they're not picked to do much this year."

Aledo faced a stiff test in a five-point week one win over Colleyville Heritage, a Heritage team that would likely be a favorite over Westlake.

Aledo 41 -  Westlake 15
