West Texas Insider Games of the Week

Preview 5 big games in West Texas for week 2

1A Dll Follett vs 1A Dll Turkey Valley

If their season opener (52-6 over 1A Dl Water Valley) is any indication of what kind of year the Follett Panthers will have, things are looking pretty good. As a 2015 state finalist and returning almost the exact same team, the Follett Panthers are looking to have yet another successful season with QB Christian Barber and RB Fabian Gordillo leading the pack. They’ll meet some tougher competition in week 2 though. The Valley Patriots started their season off in dominating fashion as well with a 56-6 win over Ropes. Returning most of the starters from their 2015 regional semifinalist team, the Patriots have quite a bit of experience under their belt, including RB Adrian Espinoza and LB Jayton Smith. Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm Friday in Turkey.

2A Dll Wheeler vs 2A Dll Memphis

The Wheeler Mustangs look to the Memphis Cyclones for some competition in week 2. The Mustangs return key pieces in QB Holden Guest (2015 district offensive player of the year), WR/S Traylen Drake and WR/LB Ivan Lopez. The Mustangs dominated Texhoma in their season opener 49-13, but Memphis did the same with a 54-12 win over Olton. The Cyclones return quite a few of their talents from their 2015 regional finalist team including RB David Dickson, OL/DL Cesar Maestas and LB Matthew Haase. Memphis travels to Wheeler Friday for a 7:00 pm kickoff.

3A Dl Wall vs 3A Dll Cisco

The game count is 1-1 after their last two matchups, and the tiebreaker this Friday between the Wall Hawks and Cisco Loboes is the game to be at. The Hawks had trouble last week with another pack of loboes in a 46-20 loss to a strong 4A Dll Monahans team while Cisco took down Breckenridge 24-3. Wall looks to FB/S Tymber Carr and RB Thomas Halfmann, returners from their 2015 regional semifinalist team, and Cisco brings back a lot of experience in QB Kase Gayle along with LBs Cecil Beasley and Dillon Brunson. The Hawks attempt to defend their turf Friday at 7:30 pm.

4A Dl Brownwood vs 4A Dll Graham

Brownwood is hungry for a win after a tough 3 point loss to 5A Canyon in double OT last week (20-17), but they’re in for another battle week 2 as they visit the Graham Steers. Brownwood made some changes in new head coach Kyle Maxfield, but they return a lot of the same talent including RB/LB Gavin Jefferson and WR/DB Conner Howard. Graham suffered quite the loss from 4A Dl Sanger last week (44-7) and are looking for a win against the Lions, especially after taking a close 59-53 loss to them in 2015. The Steers will rely heavily on all-state DE Jack Hays, LB Preston Langley and OT Hunter Dooley. Brownwood travels to Graham Friday for a 7:30 pm kickoff.

4A Dll Monahans vs 5A Canyon

The Monahans Loboes look up a few classes to the Canyon Eagles after a dominating 26 point win over 3A Dl Wall (46-20) last week. The Loboes return some speed in RB/LBs Ronin Williams and Ish Marquez along with experienced protection up front. The Eagles are able to breathe again after a win in double OT over 4A Dl Brownwood (20-17) last week but not for long. Defending their turf this week, Canyon looks to QB Gunnar Palacio, DB Bradley Vaughn and Amarillo transfer RB Jaelin Ford to lead the way. The two teams are set to showdown Friday at 7:30 pm in Canyon.
