Week 1 Thoughts
China Spring dominates
The China Spring Cougards play in one of the tougher district in class 4A with the likes of defending state champion La Vega and traditional power Liberty Hill. However, the Cougars made sure that they were heard in week one with a convincing 49-12 victory over what is supposed to be a solid Lorena squad. China Spring has plenty of challenges left along the way with 5A Huntsville up this week followed up by a showdown with Cameron Yoe in week three.
Though it is only non-district play, not many people had picked Franklin to upset Navasota. It was not only an upset, but a convincing victory as Franklin won the contest by double digits, 38-22. If you are a fan of the Rattlers, don't panic quite yet. With a new coach and a new system in place, it may take a little time to get this team where they need to be.
Gilmer wins shootout
The season openers were headlined by an all East Texas matchup between the Gilmer Buckeyes and the Liberty-Eylau Leopards. Fans who attended this Thursday night slug-fest were not disappointed. If I were to have told you before this game that Gilmer was going to score 60 points, you probably would have told me this game was going to be a blowout. That was not the case as Liberty-Eylau scored 55 of their own to make a combined 115 points between the two.
Week 2 Games
La Vega Vs. Lorena
This is a very intriguing matchup for a few reasons. La Vega did not play all that well in their season opening win over Fairfield (34-10) and Lorena was just overwhelmed by China Spring (49-12). This will be a good early measuring stick game to get a gauge on where La Vega and China Spring stand. Will we see a repeat of last week, or will Lorena step up their play and give the defending state champs a run for their money?
Josh's Pick: La Vega by 21.
Terrell Vs. Kennedale
Terrell is new to 4A after being in the 5A classification for many years. The Tigers are expected to compete in region II this year and they backed that up with a convincing 26-0 season opening win over Paris. Kennedale was one of the few teams in the state that had a bye in week one. Could this be the first of two times these teams square off this season?
Josh's Pick: Kennedale by 7.
La Grange Vs. Argyle
Things did go over all that well for La Grange last week. They did not lose, but they did not win as their game with Liberty Hill was eventually called off due to weather. The biggest loss was the fact that RB J.K. Dobbins, an Ohio State commit, was hurt in the early going. It is not expected to bee too serious, but he may not play this week. Argyle, one of the top programs in the state, is also expected to be without quarterback Dane Ledford, so things may equal themselves out in that respect.
Josh's Pick: Argyle by 10.
Wimberley Vs. Giddings
Wimberley was impressive in their opener, easily taking down La Vernia, 33-7. Giddings did not have as much luck, falling to Navarro, 37-21. These two did play last year with Giddings coming out on top, 35-24.
Josh's Pick: Wimberley by 3.
Abilene Wylie Vs. Lubbock Monterey - Wylie by 10
Carthage Vs. Liberty-Eylau - Carthage by 7
Henderson Vs. Tatum - Henderson by 14
Cuero Vs. Yoakum - Cuero by 21
Columbia Vs. Wharton - Wharton by 14
Orangefield Vs. Kirbyville - Orangefield by 14.
