1A Dl Happy Cowboys vs 1A Dll Turkey Valley
The Happy Cowboys started their season off by dominating 1A Dl Sterling City (47-22) in week one, but returning from their bye week won’t be an easy task. The Cowboys, led by LB Karson Bryan and ATH Colton McCarley, prepare to visit the 2-0 Valley Patriots on Friday. While relying heavily on RB Adrian Espinoza and LB Jayton Smith, the Patriots have scored a combined 110 points and only given up two touchdowns so far this season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm Friday in Turkey.
2A Dl Post Antelopes vs 3A Dll Coleman Bluecats
The Post Antelopes will finally see some competition this Friday after defeating 2A Dl Abernathy (21-0) week one and 2A Dll Tahoka (74-28) week two. The Lopes turn to QB Escobedo and RB/DL A.J. Reed to lead the pack as they attempt to defend their turf against the Coleman Bluecats. The game count is 1-1 between the two teams since their meeting in 2014 and though the Antelopes haven’t taken a loss this season yet, neither have the Bluecats. Coleman started the season off with a shutout over 3A Dl Jim Ned (37-0) and then took 3A Dl Comanche last week (24-10), while led by QB/LB Bryson Hammonds and LB Riley Harris. Coleman travels to Post Friday for a 7:30 pm kickoff.
4A Dl Levelland vs 4A Dl Andrews
The Levelland Lobos, propelled by QB Nick Gerber and their high power offense, seem to be the team to fear. A few weeks into the season, the Lobos hold a clean record after beating 3A Dl Muleshoe (56-31) and 3A Dl Shallowater (49-7). They jump into their class this week as they prepare for the Andrews Mustangs. The Mustangs are off with a 2-0 start as well with wins over 5A Lake View (65-27) and 5A Lubbock High (28-16) while led by QB Triston Williams and WR/CB Keegan Thompson. Levelland road trips to Andrews Friday, kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
5A Abilene Cooper vs 6A Abilene High
If you can make your way into Shotwell Stadium come Friday, this cross town rivalry will be the game to be at. The Cooper Cougars are 1-1 going into week three of the season after a win over 6A Keller (30-14) and a loss from 5A Grapevine (61-7). The Cougars return a lot to watch from their 2015 regional semifinalist team including QB Austin Smith and RB Devin Johnson, but the Abilene Eagles are in about the same boat. The Eagles are 1-1 heading into week three as well with a loss from 6A San Angelo Central (63-26) and a win over 6A Midland Lee (48-14) while relying on experience from RB Abram Smith and DB Isaac Buenrrostro. The rivalry continues Friday night at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene 7:30 pm.
5A Lubbock Cooper vs 6A Wolfforth Frenship
The biggest rivalry in Lubbock continues Friday when the Cooper Pirates seek revenge after a 21-16 loss from Frenship in 2015. Unable to finish their game against 5A Amarillo High in week one due to weather conditions, the Pirates got their first win of the season last week over 5A Canyon Randall (34-21) with experienced QB Jarrett Doege and S Ty Thomas paving the way. Frenship goes into week 3 with two wins under their belt (6A Montwood 24-14, 6A El Dorado 42-28) and will be led by DE Jacob Piel, RB/CB Zae Johnson and WRs Alfonso Aguilar and Adryane Atkins. The Tigers defend their turf Friday at 7:00 pm.
