Week 2 Thoughts
Harmony throttles Waskom
After Waskom’s tight 26-20 win over Jefferson to open the season, everyone was waiting to see what the two-time defending state champions could do with a solid Gilmer Harmony squad, which was ranked inside of our top 25 poll. It was an eye opener as Harmony dropped 62 points in a 62-26 blowout win. Is this the end of the world for Waskom? Not quite. This was still a non-district game, but there does appear to be room for improvement to get back to a state championship level.
Yoakum picks up quality loss
Most of the time, you hear about quality wins, but hardly ever about quality losses. In Yoakum’s 14-7 last second loss to Cuero last week, you would have to consider that a quality loss. Cuero is a 4A DII team ranked #3 in the state. Anytime a smaller classification team can play a team of that caliber within a touchdown, it should always raise the stock of that team. Sometimes analyst always have that reaction to drop a team because of a loss, but Yoakum jumped up in our poll for week three.
Rockdale suffers tough loss to Taylor
Rockdale has always been that team right on the edge of breaking out of region III. Things started out well in week one with a 33-21 victory over a quality West team. Things did not go so well in week two as the Tigers suffered a setback loss to Taylor, 37-28. The Ducks are a much larger school in terms of enrollment, but Rockdale was favored by a couple of touchdowns heading into that one.
Week 3 Games
Grapevine Faith Christian (2-0) Vs. Brock (2-0)
Last week, Brock picked up an impressive 57-41 victory over a top 5 TAPPS Midland Christian team. This week, they get another top five TAPPS team in Grapevine Faith Christian. The game versus Midland Christian went down to the wire, and we may very well see more of the same this week.
Josh’s Pick: Brock by 7.
Wall (1-1) Vs. Lago Vista (2-0)
After taking one on the chin in week one to Monahans (46-20), the Wall Hawks responded nicely with a 19-18 win over perennial power Cisco in week two. Next up will be Lago Vista. The Vikings appear to be dramatically improved for 2016. Lago Vista picked up a quality 42-32 win over Brady. Brady was considered by many to be a top five team out of 3A DI region I.
Josh’s Pick: Wall by 10.
Arp (1-1) Vs. Alto (2-0)
This East Texas battle will feature a top five from 3A DII and a top five from 2A DII. Alto has been typical Alto through the first two weeks of the season, averaging over 50 points in their two wins over Winona and Big Sandy. After falling to a tough Tatum team in week one, Arp rebounded with a convincing 42-20 victory over Hughes Springs.
Josh’s Pick: Arp by 7.
Coleman (2-0) Vs. Post (2-0)
Much like our other division II game, this matchup features one of the best from 3A and one of the best from 2A. Coleman is expected to be a player for the regional title this year and picked up a good victory over Comanche (24-10) in week two. Post is also expected to compete for a regional title and easily got by Tahoka last week, 74-28.
Josh’s Pick: Coleman by 3.
