TheOldCoach 4A Week 3 Outlook

TheOldCoach's Josh Pratt looks back on week one and previews some of the bigger matchups coming up in week three!

China Spring impresses through two games

In 2015, China Spring was the second best team out of a region where La Vega, the eventual state champions, also called home.  The Cougars have been one of, if not the most impressive team in 4A this year.  China Spring easily defeated both Lorena (49-12) and Huntsville (55-8) in their first two games.  If this team continues to play at this level, they are going to be very difficult to beat.

Stephenville starts slow out of the gate

Stephenville and struggle do not go in the same sentence all that often.  That may be an understatement at this point after back-to-back losses to Cleburne (66-4) and Springtown (30-28) to begin the 2016 campaign.  Losing in non-district is never the end of the world, but this slow start should be somewhat of a concern for Yellowjacket fans.

West Orange-Stark’s dominance

Through the first two games of the season, there are not many teams that can say they have shutout both of their opponents while scoring over 80 points in the process.  Well, West Orange-Stark, the defending state champs, are one of those teams that can.  The Mustangs, which are one the top programs in the state, have easily gotten by Nederland (42-0) and LCM (45-0) to begin their 2016 campaign.

Week 3 Games

Celina (1-1) Vs. Argyle (2-0)
There are certain matchups that you always look forward to before a season begins.  On one hand, you have one of the more traditional powers in the state with Celina and their seven state championships.  On the other hand you have Argyle, which has been one of the more dominating teams out of 4A the past four to five years.   This is a number one versus number six matchup and the scoreboard should reflect that at the end of the night.

Josh’s Pick: Argyle by 14.

China Spring (2-0) Vs. Cameron Yoe (2-0)

The top matchup in Central Texas for week three is going to be played in Cameron when the Cougars of China Spring come to town.  There has not been a team in 4A that has been more dominant than China Spring in their two opening blowout wins.  Meanwhile, there has not been a team in Texas that has had more success than Cameron Yoe since the 2010 season.  This is truly an elite level 3A versus and elite level 4A matchup.

Josh’s Pick: Cameron Yoe by 1.

Liberty Hill (1-0) Vs. Brownwood (1-1)
It does not have that same McCoy/Shipley feel, but a Graham and Brownwood game is always a big rivalry contest.  After suffering a tight 20-17 loss to Canyon in their opener, Brownwood bounced back with a 34-30 win over their rivals.   Liberty Hill had their week one game rained out with La Grange, but impressed in a 30-0 shutout over La Vernia.  This should give us a better idea of where both teams stand within their division.

Josh’s Pick: Liberty Hill by 14.

West Orange-Stark (2-0) Vs. Bridge City (2-0)

In previous years this would not have been a good matchup.  That has changed for 2016 as Bridge City, under Coach Dwayne DuBois, has been very impressive so far through two games.  The Cardinals has completely dominated the likes of Hamshire-Fannett (56-15) and North Forest (56-12) to begin the season.  Those are the kind of results you have to have if you want to compete with the likes of the Mustangs.
Josh’s Pick: WO-S by 14.
