West Texas Insider Games of the Week

Preview 5 Big Games in West Texas

2A Dl New Deal Lions vs Abernathy Antelopes

The undefeated New Deal Lions don’t have to look far down the road for possibly their toughest opponent of the season. Being a rivalry game that’s most likely for the district championship this year, it will be a packed house when the Lopes host the Lions on Friday. The Lions rely on QB Jaxson Durham connecting with WR Mark Adams while the Lopes look to RB Mark Pando and experience up front. New Deal handed Abernathy a 41-7 loss last year, but neither team returned a lot of those guys. This rivalry continues Friday in Abernathy at 7:30 pm.

3A Dl Littlefield Wildcats vs Muleshoe Mules

The Muleshoe Mules host the Littlefield Wildcats on Friday for another great West Texas rivalry game. The Mules, with leaders in WR Jason Florez and DE Dagen Dunham, took a district loss from River Road a few weeks ago, but I wouldn’t let that hold too much thought. The Wildcats, looking to RB Chris Douglas, are undefeated in district play with wins over Shallowater, Friona and Slaton. The Mules host the Wildcats on Friday at 7:30 pm as the War on 84 continues.

4A Dll Monahans Loboes vs Sweetwater Mustangs

The Monahans Loboes road trip to Sweetwater on Friday to take on the Mustangs. The Loboes are undefeated in district play, but this might be their biggest test yet because the Mustangs are undefeated on the season. The Loboes have strength and size up front while looking to RB Ronin Williams. The Mustangs have a lot of experience that returned from last year’s squad including DB Michael Green, LB Hunter Mobley and RB Jacoby Hunt. Monahans is in Sweetwater on Friday for a 7:00 pm kickoff.

5A Monterey Plainsmen vs Lubbock Cooper Pirates

The Monterey Plainsmen look just across town for their next opponent, but I’m not sure I would want to mess with the Lubbock Cooper Pirates right now. Handing Lubbock Coronado their very first loss of the season last week (34-27), the Pirates look to signal caller Jarret Doege leading the offense. I wouldn’t doubt the Plainsmen though either. Both Monterey and Lubbock Cooper took a district loss from Abilene Cooper, but the Plainsmen only lost by 7 on the road while the Pirates lost by 13 at home. Monterey did take quite the loss from Coronado a few weeks ago though. Monterey is at Pirate Stadium Friday at 7:30 pm.

5A Canyon Eagles vs Caprock Longhorns

The Canyon Eagles visit The Bivins one last time for the regular season on Friday as they take on the Caprock Longhorns. The Eagles, led by QB Gunnar Palacios and RB Rowdy Vaughn, haven’t slowed down since their only district loss from Amarillo Week 2, and they’re coming in stronger than ever this week after handing Dumas their very first loss of the season. The Longhorns, looking to WR Alex Cantu, show two district losses so far from Randall and Dumas, but they’re also the only team in the district who has beaten Amarillo. We’ll see if Canyon can keep their streak going 7:00 pm Friday at Bivins.
