West Texas Insider Games of the Week

Preview 5 Big Games in West Texas

2A Dll Iraan Braves (Visitor) vs Wellington Skyrockets (Home)

While enduring an emotional week, the Iraan Braves and Wellington Skyrockets plan to meet in Abilene for the State Semis. Though hearts will be heavy due to Iraan’s recent tragedy, this Friday is sure to be a special one. Cheer squads from all over the state have offered to come support the Braves, and they are more than welcome to. All cheerleaders, mascots, and sponsors will be admitted free into the game (They must have their uniform or something to identify them as a cheerleader/mascot. Park in the West parking lot and enter through the middle gate on the West side of Shotwell Stadium, not through usual corner gates.) Going into Friday, the Braves have a clean record on the season after defeating Munday 40-12 to earn their State Quarterfinal title. The Skyrockets show a loss from Memphis (15-22) early in the season, but have cruised past every opponent since, including Seagraves, 51-0 last week. Iraan, Wellington, and those who plan to support, will all come together at P.E. Shotwell Stadium in Abilene on Friday at 7:00 pm.

2A Dl Crawford Pirates (Visitor) vs Abernathy Antelopes (Home)

The Crawford Pirates and Abernathy Antelopes fight for a ticket to AT&T Stadium Friday night in San Angelo. The State Semifinal game is no new territory for the Pirates, losing to eventual State Champ Canadian in this round last year. Crawford heads into Friday with just one loss to show from Tolar (20-34) Week 1 and a 41-14 Quarterfinal win over De Leon. The Antelopes show one loss on their record as well early in the season from Dimmitt (21-13) and defeated Anson last week 21-18 to earn their Quarterfinal title. Crawford and Abernathy are at San Angelo Stadium Friday for a 7:00 pm kickoff.

3A Dll Canadian Wildcats (Visitor) vs Gunter Tigers (Home)

The Canadian Wildcats and Gunter Tigers meet up in Wichita Falls for their State Semifinal matchup. Dominating 2A Dl as back to back State Champions, Canadian is still causing chaos even with the bump up to 3A Dll this year. Showing a few losses early in the season from Bushland (35-38) and Perrtyon (14-24), the Cats haven’t been stopped since skidding by Sonora last week 27-21 in overtime. Despite their thrilling win last week, the Tigers might be the Wildcats’ toughest opponent yet. Going into the Semis, the Tigers, led by QB Trey Carr, are undefeated on the entire season with a 45-22 win over Winona last Friday. Canadian and Gunter road trip to Wichita Falls Friday for a 7:00 pm kickoff.

3A Dl Mineola Yellowjackets (Visitor) vs Wall Hawks (Home)

The Mineola Yellowjackets and Wall Hawks face each other in Waco this week. The Jackets’ return to the State Semifinals is nothing surprising. Led by QB Jeremiah Crawford, they lost a few tough early games to Van (21-42) and Kaufman (31-41), but have dominated everyone since, including Pottsboro 46-3 last week. The Hawks, looking to RB Thomas Halfmann and FB Tymber Carr, lost to Monahans Week 1 (20-46), and are coming off of an impressive 28-17 win over 2015 State Champ, Brock. Mineola and Wall kick off Friday at Waco ISD Stadium 7:00 pm.

4A Dll Gilmer Buckeyes (Visitor) vs Sweetwater Mustangs (Home)

The Gilmer Buckeyes and Sweetwater Mustangs face each other in Waco on Friday. The Buckeyes, led by DB/WR Kollin Hurt and WR LaMarcus Morton, show just one loss on the season from Carthage (37-55) and eased by Celina last week 43-17. The Mustangs, looking to RB Jacoby Hunt and LB Hunter Mobley, had a struggle with Monahans (16-19) in district play but haven’t skipped a beat other than that. They earned their Quartfinal title last week with a 38-14 win over Seminole. Gilmer and Sweetwater kick off at McLane Stadium in Waco Friday at 7:00 pm.
