Gary Joseph Promoted to Lead Katy High School

It didn't take long for Katy High School to get a new football coach as longtime defensive coordinator Gary Joseph was named the head boss of the proud program.

After 22-year coach Mike Johnston resigned on Friday to take over at Houston Christian High School, it took barely more than three days before Joseph—Johnston's defensive coordinator for the entire 22 years—was named coach during the school's Monday night celebration of its 2003 Class 5A Division II state championship, the third under Johnston.

Joseph has also spent his coaching career at Austin Westlake, Freeport Brazosport and Luling before joining Johnston's staff.

For his part, Johnston was thrilled with the selection of his good friend to be entrusted to the Tiger program. Johnston admitted that he often thought that Joseph might move on to a head coaching job at some point over the past two decades, but he was pleased that the school board agreed to elevate the defensive coordinator.
