The first East Texas Football Classic will feature four games over three days at the Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler, beginning with Longview Pine Tree and new coach Tim Russell battling Gilmer's Buckeyes on Thursday, August 26.
Friday includes a visitor who will truly call this a road game as Mira Mesa High School from San Diego, California, journeys to take on the Wylie Pirates. The stadium's local tenants will be a part of the Saturday doubleheader as first Tyler John Tyler meets Texarkana Texas High followed by Tyler Lee dueling Port Arthur Memorial.
We also want to remind you if you are not already aware that we are adding 2004 football schedules almost daily. We now have 62 of them up and you can access the schedules from the 2004 Football Schedules link on the left of the home page. This is a new feature that will generate lots of discussion and we plan to spread the word to media outlets for consideration in their coverage.
In coaching news, Clifton has named former Cleburne assistant Curtis Goforth as the Cubs' new football coach and athletic director. Goforth replaces Scott Barnett, who resigned recently after six years at the school. Goforth had been the defensive coordinator at Cleburne the past six years.
Back to East Texas, John King was named to succeed Pat Collins at head coach at Longview. King has been an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Longview since 2000, having come to the school with Collins from Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe, Louisiana.
Still in East Texas, Jeff Harrell resigned from Palestine to become the assistant athletic director at Texarkana Texas High. He also will coach football as coordinator of the special teams and help on the offensive line. Last year Harrell had the honor of coaching running back Adrian Peterson, who was named almost everyone's top high school player in the country and signed with Oklahoma.
Finally, Scott Forrester resigned as head coach at Marion to join the Abilene Cooper football staff, while Kevin Whaley did likewise at Floresville.
