Jerry Hoffman, sister of former Texas A&M basketball coach and now Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie, will also be moving for the 2007-08 year as she has accepted the girls basketball position at Coppell High School. Hoffman led Class 3A Crockett to a state runner-up berth in 2006-07 and counted her brother among the team's biggest supporters on its march towards the state tournament.
Hoffman's move still needs to be made official at a Coppell ISD school board meeting later in the month, but the approval seems but a formality. Hoffman replaces Mitchell Davis, who resigned.
Crockett enjoyed a 31-7 season and advanced to the state championship before falling to West Texas powerhouse Canyon. Crockett will return four starters to next year's team, so Hoffman's replacement will step into a positive situation.
Hoffman will move up to the Class 5A turf after spending 19 years coaching 3A teams, including 16 at Robinson before moving to Crockett. Hoffman's teams reached the playoffs in 15 of those 19 seasons.
The move allows Hoffman to be closer to family members from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She and her brother are from Graford west of Fort Worth.
Gillispie recently left Texas A&M to coach at the University of Kentucky. He was replaced at A&M by Mark Turgeon, formerly of Wichita State.
