Ray Zepeda's return to Galena Park led to an 8-3 record last season, but the Yellow Jackets are focused on more than just showing up for the postseason.
Nineteen players return, most importantly do-all QB Ghan McGuffie, who has established himself as one of the top offensive threats in the Houston area. McGuffie threw for 1,473 yards and 12 touchdowns while running for 942 yards and 10 visits to the end zone on the ground.
GP also gets RB Lester Bush back; Bush was the team's third-leading rusher and is also a dangerous receiving threat, averaging 18.6 yards per catch. TE Misael Cardenas was an all 21-4A selection and should be more involved in the passing game as a junior.
Antonio Morales anchors an offensive line that has a lot of depth and experience coming back. The Yellow Jackets will some size on the line, but will have to jell immediately in order to allow McGuffie and Bush to cause havoc.
The loss of Jesse Gonzales and David Lopez will hurt the defensive line, but Zepeda, a former defensive coordinator, is equipped to adapt. The Yellow Jackets are helped by the return of LB Derrick Broussard and CB Victor Polio, both of whom were second team all-district choices.
A playoff return is likely, but winning District 21-4A will depend on how Galena Park matches up with Crosby and Barbers Hill, which handed the Jackets their district losses in 2006.
