TPI 4A Early DFW Top 20 #2 Stephenville

The TexasPrepInsider DFW 4A Countdown is coming to an end and today's entry is the always powerful Stephenville Yellow Jackets who spent the majoirty of the 2006 in the State Top 10 Poll.

After getting off to a 9-0 start including wins over Wichita Falls Rider and Aledo, the Stephenville Yellow Jackets lost two of their final 3 games to finish 9-2 in 2006. SHS was eliminated by the Wichita Falls Rider Raiders in the playoffs for the second time in three years. Stephenville should be very strong again in 2007 with the return of Oklahoma State commit Kody Spano, along with the entire offensive line. There is concern in Stephenville about an unusually weak sophomore class however.

The offense as usual in Stephenville will revolve around another big time QB in Spano. Spano possesses a big time arm and is a coach's son so his work ethic is second to none, if Spano can cut down on the mistakes the ‘Jackets offense will move the ball on just about anyone. Junior RB Brad Mills will anchor the ground game after a second team all-district performance as a sophomore in 2006, he'll team with FB Trey Taylor to give Stephenville a potentially potent backfield. The top performer on the offensive line is Danny Moss at OG. The main question about the offense will be at wide receiver, where the ‘Jackets graduated some great seniors.

Stephenville had a very strong defense in 2006 and expect more of the same from the usually offensive minded Yellow Jackets in 2007. The defensive line is led by Wayne Viotto who was a first team all 8-4A performer in 2006. LB Cody Wood will lead a strong group at that position, however the headliner of the defense is all-state DB Cody Davis who is one of the top DB's not only in the Metroplex but in the entire state.

Stephenville is solid number two team but like many of the teams in the top 10 they are not without flaws. The offensive line is still a question mark, if they don't improve from last year's performance the Stephenville offense may struggle against good defensive ball clubs in 2007.
